Liverpool and Tottenham fight for £8.5m Belgian winger

FC Twente winger Nacer Chadli wanted by Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur

Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur are set to lock horns once again as they battle for the signature of FC Twente winger Nacer Chadli, reports talkSPORT.
The 23-year-old has been heavily linked with a move away from the Eredivisie this summer, as a host of top European clubs prepare bids for his signature.
Juventus, Borussia Dortmund and Shakhtar Donetsk are all believed to be consider offers for the Belgium international - who scored 12 league goals for Twente in 2012/13 - with the opportunity to play Champions League football high on the player's agenda.
However, according to Chadli's agent, Daniel Evrard, he is willing to snub their advances in favour of a switch to the Premier League, despite the fact neither Liverpool or Spurs will be involved in Europe's elite club competition next season.
"Nacer wants to play in the Champions League, but he is also attracted by English football. We expect something from this angle," Evrard told De Telegraaf.
Andre Villas-Boas will be hoping to get one over Brendan Rodgers again, just like he did when securing the services of Clint Dempsey and Gylfi Sigurdsson last summer.
Both players were on the radars of Tottenham and Liverpool, and both came to the same decision that White Hart Lane instead of Anfield would be better for their long-term futures.
Spurs also have a Belgian contingent of Mousa Dembele and Jan Vertonghen to call upon to help convince Chadli to choose north London over Merseyside.

I know absolutely nothing about him, but he looks a bit rapey in that first picture.

That aside, I think we should sign him just to upset Liverpool.

If we're talking Eredivisie wingers, i'd prefer Luciano Narsingh.

I have a Dutch friend who supports Twente. He thinks this is just Chadli's agent trying to drum up some interest. Every Twente player is for sale at the right price, they won't battle to hold on to anyone. Chadli was previously linked to Everton and Fulham, now it's Spurs and Liverpool. I think Fulham or Everton is more his level in England.

I'd be surprised if Spurs are really in for him. Could have had him at any time in the last 2 seasons, even though the report suggests AVB wants him. Again, surprising. Also very surprising to see Juve's name there. Not so much Shakhtar and Dortmund.

Belgian here. Not surprised at all we're after him. Proper winger, got goals in his locker. Am big fan of him and hope he ends up at WHL. Interesting fact is he really flourished at Twente last month of the season after beng played on the 10 position. He has more power than fellow Belgian Dries Mertens - also the reason he is ahead of him in the national squad.

PS Dusan Tadic, also Twente, is a proper winger too. We should have a look at him as well.

So Belgium is the new Croatia for us then? Everybody ok with that?

Personally, I couldn't give a floating fart if they're from Mars, as long as they are 1, creative... Or 2, a better striker than what we currently have on our books. These Belgians really do look bloody good though, don't they?

Just to keep you updated: Chadli played on the 10 for Belgium yesterday , behind Benteke and did very well. What I specifically liked was his forward passing. Could suit us, as imo play too much lateral balls. Kept good hold of the ball as well.

So all in all, good performance from him. Would give options for LW and FC. Would have convinced some souts I guess. Benteke on the other hand missed a sitter and failed in 2 one on ones. That's a few millions of his price tag...

How many players is this that we're not going to sign? I'm losing the will to live.

we will sign someone, but we're being linked to about 3 players a day.

It's just standard fare for the transfer window, you've been around long enough to know this mate!

We'll sign players, no doubt. Just have to hope the signings are going to be worth the bloody wait. Chadli looks good but he doesn't excite me as some other players we're currently linked to.

I do think that when players 'become available' or are being touted around by their clubs/agents that so called interest from Spurs and Liverpool are cheap shots for stories. Is there any grounds in this or is it lazy journalism?

If the club want him and he's good then great.

It's got to be predominantly lazy journalism. Here's how it works:

Ever since the years of us splashing the cash on players like Bentley, Pav and Bent the papers reckon we're in for pretty much anyone that's seen as a "good" player. It's mostly a product of our recent ascendency from a mid-table outfit to one who constantly puts pressure on the big boys. They know we need to sign players to improve and catch up with the others and that Spurs fans are desperate for this to happen, so they'll print any bollocks to make us bite onto the bait.

Arsenal are now really close to us in our rivalry and we've practically caught up with them, just need to give it the final push. They'll be linked with similar players as us because they're on a similar level and have similar budget restrictions. They get the odd higher calibre player linked due to the fact that they've got some recent history, which is rapidly fading away, hence the increasingly similar transfer speculations to ours. Their fans will also bite as they're desperate not to be overtaken by us. It's their biggest fear.

Liverpool are easy targets too as they've gone the opposite way to us and are desperate to get back to the big time. Seeing United overtake them in trophies is absolutely killing their fans. They're not even the best team in Liverpool right now! Since they're doing worse than us they get linked with players of a slightly lesser calibre to us and Arsenal, but the odd big name because of their history they so desperately cling on to.

United only get linked with the odd player here or there, mostly up-and-coming talents due to their excellent ability to develop youth (a Fergie thing, not sure how Moyes will do it though), but they're pretty much a dominant force so the media are not as rife with speculation with them. Also, I think they have enough power to tell the media to keep out of it at times.

And finally, City and Chelsea get linked with anyone who will cost a hell of a lot of money 'cause they're plastic mega-rich clubs. (y)
