Mattheus was a total destroyer, they didn't call him Der Panzer for nothing. Thing was he was equally as good with the ball as he was without it. He even excelled in his latter days as a sweeper, and his sheer longevity at the very top level is why he gets in my side. He was an 8/10 every game I ever saw him play and he made both Bayern and Germany tick. An armour plated Rolls Royce of a player
Going back earlier with German midfielders like Breitner and Netzer, think they set the blueprint for versatility in midfield. The Dutch did too in the 70s with Johan Neeskens and others.

England had a great team and players in the late 60s early 70s. Great midfielders too like Colin Bell but think we were just held back by the structures we had in place that stifled development at that time.

the first World Cup I can fully remember was 1990, that German team was brilliant and Mattheus was unbelievable in that tournament. His drive from midfield was brilliant, I’ll post one of my favourite goals from that tournament since someone mentioned him

Just based on the eye test of those players since I've been seriously watching football and what I would like to see in a team.

Southall

Brehme
Baresi
Beckenbauer
Cafu

Cruyff
Mattheus
Zidane

Ronaldo(CR7)
Van Basten
Messi

Poor bloke got so much grief/abuse when I watched him playing for Everton at Home Park, against Plymouth Argyle in the FA Cup. I'm gonna guess it was round about 87/88.

Played an absolute blinder, but had nothing but "fat greasy bastard" and Pasty crusts hurled at him for 90 minutes.

Was a brilliant 'keeper, though.

Interesting reading everyone's lineups. It's always subjective and a bit of fun. It's a generational thing too obviously. I'm actually surprised that there aren't more Xavi inclusions from some of the younger folks. Seen Modric's name included. It'd be a tough call between those two in that position/role if we're thinking about more recent players.

It was tongue in cheek, mate. A word play on the goat theme. I've read plenty of stuff before about Garrincha's colourful history including the infamous goat, the four-legged animal, story. Guess it's never funny when you have to explain a joke :) .
Fuck sake, my bad ?

This with a couple of changes.

Yashin or Buffon in goal. Campos left the goal open to run around outside the area a little too often for my tastes. Entertaining but a risky player.
I think Lahm slightly edges Zanetti but very close
I would drop Maradona back into midfield to replace Zidane then add Cruyff or Messi

Schmeichel

Baresi Ferdinand Desailly

Cafu Carlos
