jeez, it's not like they're on 50k per week,... and Tommy is only 19, give them a break

much better than paying players like JJ to not play...

Well Livermore is 21 and at that age I'd expect more of him, especially if he's going to be playing at a club like Spurs.

Have a flick though the squad and see where everyone else was at 21. Pretty much all of them were being talked about as standout players at the time, if not before.

Even JJ who is supposedly rubbish was highly regarded at that age.

Yeah I've made this point before; Livermore should be compared to Walker, Bale now and Lennon, Huddlestone when they first arrived. Can't see him make it. But as was said above we also need squad members that are happy to put in the occasional shift without moaning. His attitude seems very good when he comes on.

Carrol's still young so we'll see how he develops. But he's clearly not anywhere near competing for a place on the bench with everyone fit at the moment so he's got some distance to go.

But I guess part of the point with developing these players - Townsend, Rose etc. in addition to the two - is that if they don't make it we can get a bit of cash for them from the likes of Wolves..

My concern surrounding Livermore, is that when he gets his opportunity, whether that is here at Spurs or at various loans, he never takes them. Why has he never excelled on loan? He struggled to get a game at Leeds and Ipswich, which would start to ring alarm bells with me.

I like livermore, at least he seems to look forward when he gets on the ball and makes things happen, he's also physically imposing and works hard. Good squad player at the moment for sure, and defo worth tying down for the next few years imo.

Congratulations to the lads on a new contract, both have potential for sure. From the clubs point of view we must ensure that we still have a core of English/British players at the club, having both identity and the homegrown rule in mind. Hopefully, one or both will step up and become an important player in the future.

We shouldn't look to give them new contracts just because they're British. If we want to keep on improving and consolidate a position as top 4 challenges, we have to ensure we recruit the best young talent irrespective of where they come from.

Livermore is actually 22 now, I'm not sure comparing him to others is fair, there are examples of players who develop later and this may be the case with him.

think i'd much rather have jenas(before injury) on the bench than livermore to be honest.

True, quality is of outmost importance. However, we must include eight homegrown players 25 player-squad, and with homegrown players such as King, Parker and Defoe having a few seasons left at top level, it is in the clubs interest to keep these two at the moment. I'm not saying that they'll be top class in the future, just stating that the HG-rule is another factor the club must consider when planning for the future.

UEFA defines locally-trained or 'homegrown' players as those who, regardless of their nationality, have been trained by their club or by another club in the same national association for at least three years between the age of 15 and 21. Up to half of the locally-trained players must be from the club itself, with the others being either from the club itself or from other clubs in the same association. With this in mind, a player like Souleymane Coulibaly will be considered both HG and trained by club if he's still with us at the age of 22.

Quality over nationality every time, still it would be nice to see an English lad make it through the ranks at the club like King did.
