That could just be trying out games at other venues. There will not be a European based NFL franchise anytime soon.
Possibly not. But they've moved from pre-season games in England to regular season games, there is at least semi-serious talk about a London-based franchise, and the only 'legacy' that Roger Goodell has so far created is fuck-ups with player discipline. Any Commissioner that takes the NFL from being an exclusively US sport to establishing it globally will always be remembered positively.

Stranger things have happened.

Streuth 225, loosen. This and the previous answer to my post. Take it easy and be creative.

Scenario. Why does the NFL want to come to the UK really? To try boost their 'relatively insular' game globally. In the meantime we have a major product globally that's getting bigger and bigger and the States is the last really huge market to fully take over. I don't believe for a second that Whitesocks was fully serious but it could (although won't) be something to consider. Why would we get booted out of the League when it would be done fully with the League's blessing and actual participation? The Leagues product taking a another major foothold in the US. Short term only of course but win win - he/she's right.
Exactly - and if the 'tour' helped pay off a significant chunk of the debt, that has to be for the greater good.
I guess the problem would not be so much the premier league but the US soccer leagues who might ask what they are getting out of it. We - a foreign company - might be thought to be draining resources out their game. Maybe they take that kind of thing more seriously there.

It is different for the NFL coming to London as we do not have a similar product.

Calm down 225 - I'm just thinking outside the box.

Here's an idea - why don't we play our home games in the states for a year?
The grounds would be packed; it would raise our profile X100; it would boost the premier league and all the other clubs in it.
We could still play the europa and cup games in mk or wembley.
And with squad rotation, we could keep a core number of players out there to reduce travel fatigue.

It is not a strategy to win the league, but these are exceptional circumstances,
and we could make a bit of money. It is just a short term solution and a win win win for everyone.

Disgusting idea. Would be the death of English football as soon as it starts getting played abroad. I would hate it if Spurs were the team responsible.

I can't believe that the majority are up in arms about the idea of us spending a season in the midlands, yet people are actually serious about the possibility of us spending a season approximately 4,000 miles or more away from every PL team.

No, it wouldn't be for the greater good. It would be the beginning of the end for the domestic league. It would alienate the loyal domestic fan base and cause uproar amongst the other teams.

It's funny to think that DL gets all sorts of shit for not spending an extra £2m on a player, yet the idea of moving the entire team to another continent for a season - purely for financial gain - is a serious suggestion.

This idea is 3 days too late.

Spot on. It would also open the door for an MLS team to enter the PL because "why not, they did it?". :wtf:

I think it's a great idea. Won't be able to go to Milton Keynes so will be watching it on tv. The players might get a bit of the hump though, having to move to America for a season.

You do realise we've been playing games abroad for many years now?

I've just found this posted by "tommyboy" on COYS and thought it well worth putting in this thread.

"I'm lucky enough to be quite close to the stadium project but can't say much (more than my jobs worth) but I can tell you it's all systems go, we are very serious about building the stadium and it is happening. You have no ide how much work has gone into getting us to the position we're in now. Also it's worth noting that Daniel Levy is very passionate about Spurs and wanting the best for our club

Stadiums are notoriously difficult to get off the ground and unlike Chelsea & Liverpool who have been trying to get their schemes off the ground for just as long we won't be settling for a compromised solution + teams like Everton who are still no-where near! "

This was posted about tommyboy by RobH on skyscraper city:

He went on to say re: the new designs...

"I think they wish they could [show us the plans now] but a lot of the info is sensitive & fragile

Defo worth the wait!"

From some of his other posts on COYS it sounds like he's knows about a few projects in London; also posting info on the planning situation around Brentford's stadium. If he's on the wind up, he's very convincing.

Pre season friendlies and European matches. Do you support the premier league hosting domestic matches abroad?

Going off topic a bit here, but if that ever happens it will be a sad day for English football if we let Americans ruin it.

It's one season where we can't play at home. If the majority of season ticket holders are going to give up their ticket for a season. Then what difference does it matter if it's played in MK or NY? It wont happen. The logistics are too difficult to manage. Especially if we were in Europa. But it does make it an interesting idea.

Why do you think the Americans would ruin it anyway? MLS is arguably more sustainable than European football.

First British club to win a European trophy.
First non league club to win the FA Cup.
First club to play on the moon ( you heard it here first)

Seems to be a feeling on here that most season ticket holders wont be going to the temporary stadium, well I will where ever it is. I can also vouch for about 20 people I know, who will too. I don't care if its MK Dons, Wembley, Brighton, West Ham or even Arsenal, it simply will not matter to most season ticket holders because they love the club and will continue to support it. As for people saying going to MK Dons to watch Spurs is showing clandestine support for franchising in football, I am sorry but I cannot see the link really. Get the new stadium built ASAP so we can watch football in humane surroundings, this is what counts.

I may have gotten this wrong, but I think the idea was that perhaps we should be play our home Premiership games out in the States, not that we should join the MLS (although after watching that utter bollocks yesterday, it might be a good idea).

Just thought I'd point that out.

I'm aware of that.

For those in favour of the idea
  • Do you think any season ticket holders would want to pay £400+ on travel for "home" games?
  • Do you think any teams in the PL would want to travel 4,000 miles for "away" games?
  • How do you think we'd manage the xmas fixtures?
  • Do you think any of our players would want to suddenly move to a trailer in the USA to tour round a huge continent?
  • Do you think we built a state of the art training ground just to mothball it for a year?
  • How do you think the broadcasters (Sky/BT/BBC) would react to it?

It's bizarre that people complain about travelling back from places like Turkey after a Europa League match, but are seriously suggesting we play half our games on the other side of the Atlantic.

You'd have 19 teams voting us out of the league after the 3rd home game. I'm starting to think that the only people in favour of this are Americans.

Aren't Americans entitled to an opinion?

I have just e-mailed the club with the suggestion. I am now 100% behind the idea of moving to the states. I was only half hearted in the beginning but now realising how much it would wind up 225 I think it would be funny.

Can we stop this silly talk about playing our home games in the State. It's not going to happen.
When I fly home to see family in England, total travelling time (door to door) is usually 20 hours or so. You need a day at least to rest.

Hey buddy. There is a new stadium to pay for. Going to MK for a season or 2 will put us in further debt.
(£45m current home revenue down to what £25-£30m say).
I would not expect many fans at all to travel to the USA. And that is pretty bad. But it's a means to an end.
Going by the US pre season tours, the grounds would be packed and it would be lucrative.
The Americans love their sport and the stadiums are large - I see no reason why we couldn't generate £100m match day income for the year, after renting the facilities.
Plus the commercial side would be fantastic - we currently generate £40m - we could double that.
Maybe Levy has all the stadium finances worked out..., but a £100m boost surely wouldn't do any harm.
  • Do you think any teams in the PL would want to travel 4,000 miles for "away" games?
It would only be 1 game for each of them. Premiership players are from all over these days and think nothing of flying off to the otherside of the world for a break. The away fans would love a trip to the sunny states, especially the sides not in europe. The clubs would get more exposure. Would mourinho and wenger moan? Of course.
Perhaps we could request a set of home fixtures or away fixtures for xmas? We are promoting the premiership's product to one of their key markets. Something could be worked out for 1 season.
  • Do you think any of our players would want to suddenly move to a trailer in the USA to tour round a huge continent?
They would be in the top hotels with their families and a good season would open up opportunities for them to play in the states later in their careers.
  • Do you think we built a state of the art training ground just to mothball it for a year?
Half the squad would be using it, plus all for pre-season which is arguably the most important time.
And all the kids coming through would be using it. This is desperate stuff!!
They'd have to package it differently, but with co-commentators Klinsmann and Beckham, the marching bands and scantily clad cheer leaders, celebrity interviews.. it would be like a minor superbowl every week but with a decent game worth watching in the middle of it. Mostly.
