Interesting snippet in the athletic article that villa owners promised emery he could pick his own dof (ie monchi) so they didn’t replace lange because they were unhappy with him.

It’s an odd change though as I’d imagine monchi is more an old school little black book dof, after they spent years building up their data led approach under lange

These are compromises you make when getting in "experienced" managers like Emery, I guess.

Interesting read from The Athletic about the new guy.

Interesting piece about securing loans for youngsters stood out.

"Lange looked at loans and youth recruitment in a similar way while at Villa. With the former, Lange set up a loan department and gave Mile Jedinak, now a coach at Spurs, the job of loans manager. Choosing the right loans for young players will be another important job at Tottenham, and Villa had great success picking the right moves for players through detailed planning.

Cameron Archer went to Middlesbrough, for instance, because the numbers showed that Michael Carrick’s side created the most chances in the Championship. Archer then joined Sheffield United for £18million this summer, which included a buy-back option for Villa. The 20-year-old Aaron Ramsey was also at Middlesbrough last season, and did so well that he earned a move to Burnley for £14million plus add-ons, and with Villa again inserting a buy-back clause.

Developing young talent at Villa was important to Lange, who was involved in bringing in a number of young players aged between 12 and 17 to improve the club’s underperforming academy. Lange always took an interest in the development teams and led on some contract renewals.

He also created the player care team, fronted by Phil Roscoe (hired from Liverpool), which was credited with really helping new foreign signings settle in."

The loan thing would be a marked improvement. We seem generally quite bad at matching players with clubs to get the most out of the endeavour.

Johan Lange could bring another former FC Copenhagen boss with him to Tottenham.

Earlier this week
week, Johan Lange made the switch from Aston Villa to Tottenham, where he has
where he was announced as the new technical director with effect from 1 November,
and the Dane will play a key role in shaping the future of one of England's
England's biggest clubs.

And perhaps he will be joined by another Dane.
As Tipsbladet understands it, it is a possibility that Danish
Frederik Leth may follow his compatriot from Aston Villa to Tottenham.
He is currently Head of Research at Aston Villa, which he was brought to
by Johan Lange a few months after the latter's arrival at the Birmingham
Birmingham club.

However, nothing is certain and any move would require finding a suitable role for Frederik Leth at Tottenham.
A move would also, for obvious reasons, require Aston Villa to be prepared to say goodbye to the young Dane.
However, Johan Lange and Frederik Leth's shared history makes it obvious that the latter will also make the trip to the London club.
After all, the two have stuck together like peas in a pod for many years.
While Lange was technical director at FC Copenhagen, Leth had a
role in the scouting and analysis department at the "lions". When Lange was then
sports director at Aston Villa, Leth took over the role of technical
director at FCK. But only for a short period of time, because after half a year
he was also employed at Aston Villa.

In addition, it is rumoured from English sources that Totteham were particularly
interested in Johan Lange because of his focus on data and work with
buying and developing young players. This is something Frederik Leth has been
involved in since his FC Copenhagen days, earning him the nickname "The Brain".
Tottenham are currently enjoying huge success under head coach Ange
Postecoglou's leadership and are number one in the Premier League. Aston Villa
are also doing brilliantly and are currently fifth.

This is so important. We haven't been handling loan deals intelligently for ages. Is Scarlett even getting a game? Even Devine is not a guaranteed starter at the moment, and the Nile John loan where he didn't play football.

Sherwood and his Swindon connections got some really good loans for our players and helped develop a lot of them. But since then it's been one poor loan after another.

We are actually at the point where we have a few promising youngsters so this can only be a good thing.

Sources: Tottenham in advanced talks to agree deal with Aston Villa's Rob MacKenzie

Tottenham are in advanced talks to lure Aston Villa recruitment chief Rob MacKenzie, sources have told Football Insider.

The Premier League leaders are working on a deal to hire MacKenzie for a second time after he spent 18 months at the club from 2015 to 2016.

Tottenham have set their sights on the Villa head of recruitment after announcing on 9th October that Johan Lange was joining from the Midlands giants as their technical director.

The Dane is set to officially begin work at Spurs on Wednesday and will have responsibility for recruitment, analytics and talent identification across the club’s senior and academy teams.

Tottenham are keen to reunite Lange with MacKenzie, who has been head of recruitment at Villa since August 2020.

He has previously held senior recruitment roles at Derby County and Belgian club OH Leuven, after making his name as head of player identification at Tottenham, which involved recommending scouting targets to the club’s transfer team.

Lange had been squeezed out at Villa after Monchi took over as the club’s president of football operations in the summer, in a move that effectively put the Spaniard in charge of the first-team recruitment.

Villa owners NSWE had been concerned with Lange’s transfer record during his three-year reign at the club.

He hwas responsible for signing flops like Bertrand Traore, Morgan Sanson and Leon Bailey for big-money fees – while more successful stars like Ollie Watkins and Matty Cash were also signed on his watch.

Lange held the role of global director of football development and at Villa from June 2023, having previously been sporting director from 2020.

Can't help but smile at that bolded phrase being used to describe us.

I remember Mackenzie being well regarded when he was at Spurs previously. Still seems a step down from Gabbanini, given what the guy was doing for us.

Step down? Gabbanini did not want to stay under similar role amongst other things. Certainly not someone who is prepared to compromise and work as a team

Such a crucial part of the setup though... Look at United. All of last year's progress undone due to failure in the transfer market. And the championship is full of clubs who've spent big money unwisely...

It’s just disappointing that at the point where our scouting team were finally producing the goods, it all falls apart. I wish we could have found a way to keep Gabbiadini on board...

Are we convinced he was the difference maker? Surely we need to have a team and scouting network in place with a defined structure, so that if one or two staff move on it doesn't mean we gave to start from square one again.

I would like to think with Paratici still involved that we have some strong business continuity.

That’s fine. If he didn’t want to stay, he didn't want to stay, but he was damn good at identifying talent.
