Today showed why we need Zaniolo or a Zaniolo alternative in the squad.

Kulusevski is a young player who is bound to have some bad performances, and there’s currently no one else is the squad who can provide similar attributes.

Needs to be addressed and hopefully we can manage it before the end of the window.

To me, today showed why we need a different option at CM when we need to play 3. Also showed that we need better quality at wing back (Perisic aside). An alternative to Kulusevski would be way down my list of priorities

I still think we need both. Zaniolo and a Maddison type. Then we could’ve truly changed tactics to counter Tuchel as tactics

My preference was the same as yours at the beginning of the window, but I’m willing to back Conte’s vision for the squad. If he wants a player like Zaniolo who can (in theory) provide goals and creativity from the RWF position, that’s fine by me. It certainly would have been helpful today to be able to make a like-for-like substitution for Deki, who was uncharacteristically poor.

That being said I certainly wouldn’t be averse to a CM playmaker as an alternative if Roma continue to refuse to sell.

He should have scored today, arguably a hat trick. He also should have had an assist, but Dybala’s strike was touched onto the woodwork. Looked good though.

Why have you got a disagree for stating a fact?
Lol....seen that also. Likely fat fingers.

In other news Niko did well for the Romans... he's a strong physical presence. Would help our rotation tremendously...one can only hope ?⚽❤️

I agree with a lot of this.

But in the interest of presenting an alternate view, I do think a more pragmatic, cost effective option could have just been playing an extra man in midfield.

They outfought us generally and outnumbered us in the middle. Imagine Skipp was fit - who passes and moves better than he’s given credit for - then I think you could make a midfield unit that would have been comparable to theirs with existing resources.

It’s a tough one. Instinctively I think you’re right - we miss that type of player - but I reckon there’s more to come from our current group, and getting Skipp back and integrating Bissouma will be massive

Yeah but was tactics not personnel that did that. They dropped their forwards to be on our cms… we could easily have done that at least with Kulu but we didn’t… in theory we were matched up the same as chelsea with the same formation but their forwards dropped in on the press and let our back 3 have the ball. It was simple but very effective.

There were quite a lot of tactical switches in Chelsea’s system yesterday that allowed them to outnumber us in midfield (4v2 sometimes) and it was strange that conte was either unprepared for it or slow to react to it.
But it shouldn’t be a surprise that a manager who plays 343 (tuchel) is also aware of the weaknesses of that system and how to exploit it. Conte too, obviously- that was what was so perplexing about the way the game went on.
in terms of a solution, I feel like yesterdays game was a better argument for paqueta (who could make a midfield three much more effectively) than zaniolo, unless the plan is for Kane to drop in and keep son and deki/zaniolo as the highest players in the formation.
But the thing that stood out was how chelsea could switch between 4222 and 343 easily (Reece James is vital to this) and how we were more rigid in our plan.

But what do I know. I’m sure conte has a plan for it and will make it work when we play them again

Conte also switched systems he didn't just allow it to happen Chelsea at the Bridge is always trouble for us...we had so many of our players under performing too especially Kane and Son . Hopefully we can learn from this

What a horrible angle to show, was it to make it look more dramatic? :cautious: Great run, regardless.
It was a good run. Purely on the basis of the extended highlights (and thus superficial) I would conclude the following:
- When he gets a gallop on, he is definitely quick...
- ...but his acceleration isn't great, nor is his change of direction
- He SHOULD have scored at least one - his finishing was poor
- But he can really ping it - he hit a really nice/powerful shot
- he definitely looked like a forward, much moreso than a CM
