What does Daws need to do to get into this England squad? He is arguably a better CB than the two starting players and is playing regularly, the captain of a defence with one of the best defensive records in the league. It's not as though we have a wealth of our back-up options either. This would've been the one call-up that he could've got as well being a friendly where new players are tried and tested. Feel a bit sorry for him, not one of those footballers in it for money and I'm sure putting on an England shirt would give him immense pride.

Goalkeepers

Fraser Forster, Joe Hart, John Ruddy.

Defenders

Leighton Baines, Gary Cahill, Ashley Cole, Kieran Gibbs, Phil Jagielka, Glen Johnson, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Kyle Walker.

Midfielders

Ross Barkley, Michael Carrick, Tom Cleverley, Steven Gerrard, Jordan Henderson, Adam Lallana, Frank Lampard, James Milner, Andros Townsend, Jack Wilshere.

Forwards

Jermain Defoe, Rickie Lambert, Jay Rodriguez, Wayne Rooney, Daniel Sturridge, Daniel Welbeck.

Phil Jones and chris smalling. The only outside reason i cant see for this is that they are both more versatile. But this really isnt an excuse.

He's not good enough. I honestly don't think he is better than any of the centre backs selected.

Surely he deserves it after captaining a defense which has kept 7 clean sheets in 10 games in the league. We have only conceded in FOUR games in all competitions.

Whether he is good or not (in your opinion) he has earned his right to be selected, especially since he was almost sold before last season. Daws has the passion that is needed for England. He could be one of those to bring that passion back. How he doesn't even get selected is beyond me. He hasn't got selected now, so I doubt he will be for the world cup. Really feel for him.

I don't get what more he has to do to get selected?

However, it means more rest time for the skipper, which for AVB and Tottenham, is a good thing.

IMO Smalling isn't that great, he certainly hasnt gotten any better in his time at United. Im a Dawson fan and id certainly have him in the squad at the very least. What was the stat on Dawson again, in the reason to be optimistic thread?

While I think he is right there I don't mind him not getting selected, Dawson needs his rest and I am pretty sure he would only be on the fringes of the team anyway so why not get Dawson as much rest as possible to help Spurs and let England take care of itself.

No Caulker either, which is equally stupid even though he's not ours any more.

In fact, it's far MORE stupid given that his age means that he should be a big part of future England.

Fans of other teams have a much different view on Dawson than we do. Are we too harsh or do we just see him more? Unnecessarily criticised in my opinion, not a world beater, but as good or slightly better than some of the other England options.

The only reason I can see is that Jones and Smalling have 'yoof' on their side, even though they are both always crocked and are not actually that much kop.

As for Caulker I totally agree, plays for England one minute, not in the squad the next. Baffling......but then that's English football really.

While it may be harsh on Dawson to be missing out does anyone genuinely believe he is International quality? He doesn't have pace and isn't up to much on the ball.

Can get away with it in the EPL but not at the highest level, agree that Caulker is probably ahead of him given his age.

I don't think Dawson is good enough to be a serious option at international level, other than perhaps as a stop gap. At Spurs, his character and ability to work within the prevailing setup are key, not unlike a lot of players. But there are lots of players like him who don't have that ability to slip comfortably into a new set of players; a different system, adapting quickly to less familiar situations - they rely more heavily than others on well-learned habits - they just don't have the ability to read and exploit/adapt to new situations quickly, and I think that undermines him. At Spurs he absolutely has to be at his best to justify his selection, and however well he plays, after 8 years at the club I doubt whether there are too many people who would say he should be nailed on for England.

That's not to say he's shit, he definitely isn't, and within the PL I find it just about plausible that he could play regularly for any of the top four, but he would always have to be at his absolute best, and that would always be the limit... and even then his name would always be one of the ones any top four team he played for would realistically look to upgrade on given the chance.

Personally id say the PL is a higher level than the International if I am being honest, obviously depends who you are playing. Dawson has heart (yes, yes I know you need more) but quite frankly a lot of the English players dont seem to give a flying fuck. At least with Daws you know he aint gonna be a passenger.

I really do worry when Dawson when England call him up - he has been jinxed, no disrepect to ENGLAND - BUT SPURS is always has higher priority.

Genuine question: Has he really done enough to warrant a place?

I'm glad he is not getting selected as it is one less player to worry about over the international break but this is a shit question as the obvious answer is be an integral part of one of the best defences in the PL. Whereas players like Smalling and Jones haven't
