England face striker shortage after Darren Bent hobbles off

Fabio Capello has been left with just two fit strikers after Darren Bent limped out of training this morning. The Tottenham striker hobbled off with a leg injury and remains a doubt for the World Cup qualifier against Ukraine.

Bent had a brief discussion with Capello at the London Colney training pitch in which he was seen to be looking down constantly at his leg. Shortly afterwards he limped back to be seen by the England physios.

After Emile Heskey's injury against Slovakia, Carlton Cole's withdrawal and Capello's refusal to call up Michael Owen, he has been left with just Wayne Rooney and Peter Crouch, who is back in training after shaking off a dead leg, to lead the line.

However, Capello will welcome the news that Rio Ferdinand has been passed as fit to train this morning and the defender should be available for selection on Wednesday.

Ferdinand had been suffering from a back problem and was replaced by Matthew Upson in the friendly against Slovakia on the morning of the game. Shaun Wright-Phillips, who also missed Saturday's game, returned to training too and will provide Capello with further options on the flanks.

Let's pray Pav's not too tired and doesn't pick up an injury. He looked exhausted against Azerbaijan by all accounts. :bang:

Blackburn have a slow backline so I was hoping Bent could stretch them, but I guess we now have to rely on Lennon to provide the pace - it could be similar to our home game against the Rovers.

But if Lennon gets injured Wednesday Eek

Doesn't sound too serious. I wont be too upset if Pavyluchenko starts against Blackburn after his diplay for Russia at the weekend. He has something to prove now.

This is the beauty of having a class bench, Pav can step in and knows that he has to prove himself and impress Redknapp.

if Lennon get injured we have Bentley waiting in the wings to prove his critics wrong about his move to Spurs FROM Rovers.

agbonlahor has been called up to replace bent
ssn

Not to replace, just as extra cover I think. Cole and Heskey are both definately out and Bent has picked up a knock, plus Crouch went off in the last game. Makes sense to call up another.

There does seem to be a jinx around the English team atm. Well, English strikers anyway.

I think Pav is a better player than Bent and am more than happy to see him back in our first team on Saturday, shame for Bent though that he didn't get his England chance.

As I said earlier in this thread, this is a big opportunity for Pav to come in and stake his claim. He has been left out recently and Bent took his chance, played well and scored.

I will be really disappointed if Pav looks as casual as he has at times for us, I expect him to be busting a gut to prove his worth and score. At times he's looked good and is a good finisher, other times (possibly fatigue due to playing without a break) he has looked weak and off the pace.

a lot depends how fit Pav is and will be

rovers I'm sure will be all action - we needed a rested Bent for this game - but c'est le foot (or indeed the knee)

I hope Campbell is fit and ready cos he might be be better bet for Sat -

If Pav gets injured before Sat, I'd be happy with Campbell starting.

But i'd be tempted to recall Gio just in case...
