The Dutch football federation, KNVB, have confirmed that the Dutch Cup clash between Ajax and AZ Alkmaar which was aband0ned after an incident in December when a fan tried to assault AZ's goalkeeper Esteban Alvarado will be replayed.

However, in an unprecedented step the KNVB have insisted that the match only be accessible to children under the age of 12 after overturning their earlier decision to play the game behind closed doors "on request from Ajax."

"The Dutch Cup match on January 19 in the Amsterdam Arena will be played in the company of children," the KNVB said in a statement on its website. "It has also been decided that access will only be given to children under the age of 12 to impress the educational nature of the match," it added.

The original match, a last 16 tie between the two sides, was abandoned just before half-time on December 21 after AZ's Costa Rican custodian was shown a red card for twice kicking out at the fan who had ran onto the pitch to confront Alvarado. AZ coach Gertjan Verbeek led his players off the pitch following the incident complaining about the lack of security at the Amsterdam Arena.

The fan, later identified only as "Wesley van W." was on December 29 sentenced by a Dutch court to six months in jail. He will serve four months of the six-month sentence, with the remaining two months suspended for two years, Dutch media reported.

The step taken by the KNVB is similar to one taken in Turkey last summer when Fenerbahce fans invaded the pitch in a friendly match against Ukrainian champions Shakhtar Donetsk.

After punishing the club to play two-games behind closed doors, the Turkish authorities softened their stance and allowed fans to enter the stadium – but only women and children under the age of 12.

Ajax initially requested women and children be allowed to see the match, but the KNVB turned down the request on women, saying it clashed with Dutch equality laws.
