Many reasons to be cheerful, in my opinion.

We are 5th at present, level on points with the Arse, and only 2 behind United, and all of us have had indifferent starts, dropping points where we should not have.

We battered Citeh at our place (something which pundits seem to have brushed aside quite conveniently). Beat Stoke away (not many manage that), dropped points against Wigan, West Brom and West Ham (careless, especially West Ham, they're a shower of shite and will go down). Regardless of this, we are still 5th.

We have played the majority of our games without Dawson, Defoe, Modric and Gomes - 4 nailed on starters. Could other sides cope with that degree of loss? What sort of (even worse) state would Liverpool be in without Reina, Carra, Gerrard and Torres?
Regardless of this, we are still 5th.

I honestly believe that we can go for 3rd place this year. I (like the majority of the country) see Chelsea running away with it, but after that...help yourself. Citeh will implode with in-house arguments, United are definitely on the wane. Chelsea's nearest challengers this season will be us and the Arse.

We've had an easy start and should've had more points.

My view exactly

I'm encouraged by our start in the CL, but in the prem, bluntly we've been well below where we should have been.

We had an incredibly sweet set of fixtures, and we've dropped way, way too many points.

We've missed the likes of Gomes, Dawson and Defoe very badly, but we need to be able to cope without them.

There are plenty of positives, and I think we can head into the remainder of the season with confidence, but we need to improve the standard of our play, particularly in defense

This.

I see what your saying Jazz but we really should have at least 17-18 points at the mo. Losing to wigan at home then losing to west brom and waste spam are points we need as the games will only get harder once we play better teams. It's not like we do'nt have the team to do it but we seem to implode in games we should be winning..... again! I got good faith that this trend wont continue but these silly losses should've been ironed out by now.

As others have said, we should have more points on the board by now considering our fixtures in the PL, and again other are right in saying we can be nothing but happy with how well we have started our first foray into the CL.

However, we look like we are starting to regain some confidence now with players coming back into form and importantly players such as Defoe and Dawson getting ever closer to their comebacks. So we should be optimistic about what the rest of the season may bring us.

Yep - agreed, and it really is that simple. Even the draw with City aside and with West Brom which is a tricky place to go, we should have had 6 more points. Wigan and West Ham were truly dissappointing.

We should be sitting second with the fixtures we have had.

But the more accustomed the team gets with VDV and with the return of some key players, the better and ironically I see a strong October for us.

Think we will get something from OT too, unless Rooney springs into life.

Or Howard Webb being the ref

With the exception of the first halfs against City and Werder, Ive been pretty underwhelmed so far.

With the injuries we have had, the inevitable distraction of the CL, and blending VDV into the side it has been a decent start. There are points being dropped everywhere, so I am relatively confident that once we hit some form, get Gallas, Defoe and Dawson back we can go on a really good run.

I agree but the top 5 have all had easy starts and are in the same boat. so we have dropped points and so have they. most teams have played one of the big 4\5 and also had some very winnable games. We drew with West Brom. Goons Lost. We drew with Man City Liverpool lost. I think people are being far too negative about our start.

Agree with that. We really played some fantastic footy at the end of last season and we haven't come close to replicating it so far with the exception of these two halves.

Sure we haven't played horrible for most of the time but we haven't been outstanding like in that stretch last season when we played Arsenal, Chelsea and Man City off the pitch for the most part.

That would be Chelsea form, 14 points would have more ideal, but all the teams are having unexpected results. All things considered we have done ok.

We draw aganst West brom. The only real disappointment was the Wigan game and we should at least got a point at WH.

I thought we played pretty well against Villa bar Bassong's slip. We have not exactly been firing on all cylinders but only Chelsea have got off to a flyer. I am not ecstatic but not upset about the progress so far

I think it's a good start. I don't agree about having an easier start. The fact is, football isn't played on paper. There have been numerous reasons why we haven't picked up more points. But that doesn't matter. You have to take it a game at a time, and right now we're well on course to challenge 4th again.

I think people get too caught up in what games we should win and what games we wouldn't expect to win. Last season we had the same mindset before facing Arsenal, Chelsea and Man Utd all back to back. Many had written off our chances before those games, and we also had the Man City away game a couple of weeks later.

Roll on to 5th may, wednesday night and we find ourselves having got 9 points from those 4 teams. So it doesn't really work how we'd expect it to. There's really no point playing games out in your head that way. We will lose games we expect to win, but we'll also win games we'll expect to lose.

We should just take it week by week and enjoy the season (especially Champions League nights) as much as possible. So far so good imo, with plenty still to play for. COYS!!!

Yes my expectations are very high

Maybe a bit unreasonable but I really think we should be beating teams like the spammers and wigan but we drop points where we should'nt. I know that others have dropped points aswell but we are talking Spurs! Just think we need these points onboard now as it's gonna be a long season and will only put pressure on ourselves if we do'nt.

I just think that despite the fact that we have dropped points that we should (on paper...!) have picked up, and we have, on occasion, been disappointing, we are still in 5th place!

Could be a lot lot worse...Liverpool are having a stormer I see!

Played some good stuff (Man Shitty, Bremen, Twente), showed some graft in a couple of backs-to-the wall games (Stoke, WBA) and resilience and determination in coming from behind (Wolves, Villa). So the only poor performances were Wigan and Spammers. Could/should have won either, even both, but there we are.
But, as someone else said, Gooners lost to WBA at HOME!. Scousers are in bottom 3 and ManUSA have 4 points out of 12 away from home. I bet their fans are disappointed they didn't get a single win from games against Fulham, Everton, Bolton and Sunderland. And so it goes. For me, the win against Villa could well turn out to be the turning point in our pre-Xmas part of the season.
