I think Pav or Bent & Modric just behind combo is pretty decent, it just won't work all the time against every side. Modric's a class player.

won't happen till after january.

we can't play our only 2 strikers together in a match, because we will have no one to bring on, if we need to change a game around.

also with the squad as it is - you can't play pav, and bent upfront with modric behind them in a free role, we don't have the defensive midfielders to cover for them.

I think this whole conundrum sums up the problems at Spurs over the last few years. That is to say that we buy good players without much thought of whether or not they'll be able to form a unit; a team.

This season is a good example of this particular problem. We paid a lot of money for Modric, and I'm pretty sure we all agree that he's a great player. However, to utilise his abilities, we need to play him in a 4-5-1 formation. In turn, that means we need a hard working, but creative striker up front, which we don't have, and also means we need skillful and direct wingers to get forward to support the lone man up front.

As far as the two wide roles in a 4-5-1 are concerned, the jury seems to be out. Dos Santos seems to be deemed 'not ready yet' by the coaching staff, and Lennon, for all his ability, seems to lack that final ingredient to turn him into a truly great player. Bentley's also worth a mention. Great player, a true yid, and a great passer and crosser of the ball. However, these latter attributes work better in a 4-4-2 or even a 3-5-2, where there is more than one striker in the box to get to Bentley's crosses. In a 4-5-1 there's obviously only one up-front, which can be defended against relatively easily.

Also, if we assume that we've got Lennon and Modric supporting Pav when the crosses from Bentley are going into the box, then the situation is not great, due to their lack of height and physical strength.

Again, when we bought Pav, it was said that he couldn't play with Bent. Then why did we buy him? Perhaps we thought that we'd get Arshavin to play with him. If this was the case, then we shouldn't have been fucking around with a few extra million, we should have payed Zenit what they wanted, if Arshavin was intrinsic to our strike-force.

An interesting juxta-position to the way we shape our team, is Le Arse. There is no doubt that the Goons have some good players at their club, but how many in their squad would, if you individually placed them in different teams across Europe, stand out as top-quality footballers? Not many I would guess. Yet Wenger gets the best out of them because he signs very specific types of players to form a solid unit, where they are more than the sum of their parts:

-Althletic
-Quick
-Good control
-Good movement
-Speaks French

The last point on the list is crucial, because communication is key to any team-building exercise (I sound a bit like David Brent  ).

What Spurs need to do from now on, is to pick a style or system of football that they want to play, and mould the team around it. It sounds simple, yet we haven't done this competentley in the past.

We seem to favour 4-2-3-1 at the momment

Corluka/Hutton --- Woodgate --- King/Corluka --- Bale

---------------- Jenas --------- THudd/Zokora --------------

---Bentley ------ Modric -------------- Lennon/Dos Santos

--------------------------Pav/Bent -----------------------------

With second striker chucked on if more attack needed.
Maybe against weaker teams at home

Corluka/Hutton --- Woodgate --- King/Corluka ----- Bale

----------------------- THudd/Zokora -------------------------

---Bentley ------------- Modric ------------------ Jenas

--------------------Pav ------------Bent -----------------------

the reason they cant play together is because if you watched the first few and only games they played together it didnt work. they both found themselfs on the complete other side of the pitch together. It must be noted that Modric is playing a second stricker rather then a simple 4-5-1. Us english are so formation obsesed that we dont always see exactly how the team works. At the moment 4-4-1-1 is working or more like 4-2-2-1-1, and why change a working/winning formular which has produced 8 goals in the last 3 games!!!

When Gus said they cant play together i think he meant that Modric would have to be dropped to accommodate them both.
