VDV and Pav have the nerve to take one and score after they have missed one so you have to stick with those two. If not then Crouch takes it or one of the strikers not including Defoe.

It's predictable though. I was sure Defoe was going to miss. Not only is he shit at pens, he was against the ultimate penalty saver, and also it took an age for him to take it, cos for some reason Carragher thinks he's the ref.

Talking of Carragher, am I right in thinking he's got more PL goals for us than Crouch??!

It's always astounded me that a PL player, I mean any one of them except perhaps Didier Zokora, could not smash the ball into the top corner unsavably pretty much 100% of the time. Certainly they must have the technical skill to do that; there are Sunday league guys who can for goodness sakes.

So, it must come down purely to psychology. Therefore as many people say, why not give BAE a try; he doesn't seem to be stressed about anything. Modric does them for Croatia. But if vdV is on, he should take them.

If Defoe ever dares to ask for the ball for a penalty again, he should be docked a week's pay.

He probably won't take a penalty like that again and is about the most confident player we have right now. I'd back him to bury his next penalty. Obviously if VDV is on the pitch he is certain to take it.
I seem to recall Bale missing pens is 2 different games for Wales in the world cup qualifying games as well. Has he scored a pen for us or wales yet?
VDV, Pav, Kaboul could all take pens imo.
But this is something the team needs to work on in training - its not the same thing as in a match, but if players know where in the goal they feel comfortable hitting the ball it will benefit them in matches.

Charlie can take a great pen, I remember him being the only player to score in the shootout against Man U in 2009. But he's not playing at the moment. I felt that crouchie should have taken it yesterday, Defoe doesn't give me confidence from the spot

OK , step aside . SC self appointed pen expert here ....

and ...er..I've nothing to add really..as has been said, Defoe NEVER EVER.

and yep ,without VDV mebbe try Mods...I'm even with the leftfield BAE suggestion .

Important that pens are flat on the ground imo and Pav's last miss shaved the post low and would've been perfect for me (if it had gone in:grin:).

But overall I do think time spent practising and finding out our best pen taker would be a good idea ...we doing that I wonder ?

Anyone but Defoe for the love of god never again should he be allowed anywhere near a pen his record is dismal.

Can't say I was angry at all. Sadly I was fully expecting it. Not in a pessimistically trying to convince myself not to get my hopes up-sort of way, but as soon as he stepped up it felt like he'd already missed.

VDV seems to be a guy who isn't afraid of anything when he steps up to take penalties.

He's our best penalty taker and should always take them. Keano is also very good but he's not playing.

Defoe should not be taking these penalties. He always looks scared and I think it's a mental thing with him. He has only scored something like 8 from 14 penalties.

I would say:

1. VDV
2. Keane
3. Huddlestone
4. Pav
5. Modric

I get your point, but surely we need to get JD confident for this. It is one thing not having him taking a pen in normal time, but imagine we get to a major final and he HAS to take one. I would rather have him in the groove than taking his first penalty in years (because he was so goddam awful when he did take them).

Kaboooooooooooooooom!!!!!!!!

Take the net out!

Really, I don't know whether the coaching staff do penalty practice, but if they don't they should (VDV excused as he might find it boring, the rest, compulsory).

For the first time ever I did a Didier and turned my back on the tv. My missus gave the game away.

I just had a quick look at something I recorded on ESPN the other day. It was a Liverpool game from the early 90's, unfortunately one I remember well, the 6-2 defeat. How things have changed since then. Apart from us missing a penalty :)

Can't believe the penalties in Saturday's game were our first since the end of November. Anyway VDV missed 1 and scored 1. I noticed that Defoe was going to take our third penalty on Saturday until the referees overruled the decision.

Maybe that's why the penalty was overruled.

Doesn't matter so. He would have missed anyway.

If we have to go to pens against AC Milan, I'd like to see this 5 step up.

1: VDV
2: Super Pav
3: Charlie
4: Crouchie
5: Modders

Defoe should not be allowed take penalties.

it always seems as though VDV goes for the same left side more times than not when taking a penalty.

Everytime Defoe picks up the ball to take a penalty I have to leave the room as I just know he is going to miss, on the rare occassion he does knock one in it almost feels like we have been gifted a goal out of nowhere as I am so resigned to him missing

That post just put the fear of God in me - truly scary scenario.

On the subject of pens, is it too much to ask for that a professional footballer can pass a ball into an 18 inch space without fail? Bit like also a professional footballer being unable to miss the first man when trying to cross from a dead ball/corner.
