Numbers work, you know.
Average age squad of teams that won leagues
Chelsea 27.14
Inter 26.78
Bayern 26.63
Barca 25.08
l'OM 27.05
Now to get down to 25, and add Beckham and Neville our average age (getting rid of Bentley, GDS, Niko and Charlie as a best guess), our age will skyrocket from 26.85 to 27.84
That makes us older than Hull were last year but still younger than Portsmouth. I forget who put them together.
In fact there is some evidence of a opposite correlation to average age of squad and finish. 5 of the top 6 were in the youngest 9 squads. The only one in the top half is sinking quickly this year.
ENGLAND
29.09 - Fulham
28.98 - Portsmouth
27.87 - Birmingham City
27.40 - Blackburn Rovers
27.33 - Aston Villa
27.27 - Hull City
27.20 - Stoke City
27.14 - Chelsea
27.13 - Bolton Wanderers
26.72 - Wigan Athletic
26.63 - Burnley
26.28 - Manchester City
26.28 - Tottenham Hotspur
26.19 - Manchester United
26.05 - West Ham United
26.03 - Sunderland
25.93 - Everton
25.09 - Wolverhampton Wanderers
24.79 - Liverpool
24.62 - Arsenal
So we will be 27.84 where a 10th counts loads. That means we could be significantly older than Chelsea were last year and look at the age based drop in their play. And it would make us the 4th oldest on this list of teams that finished in the bottom half. So we would be writing off next year. But we could be writing off this year, for the so called experience effect. Which I don't believe. You want one Davids, not half a team of over 30's.
