EXCLUSIVE: Pienaar warns top clubs will be back in for Modric
Published 22:26 04/02/12 By Simon Mullock Recommend

Steven Pinenaar has warned Tottenham that Luka Modric will be targeted again by top clubs this summer.

Modric has been key to Spurs’ success after they *resisted moves from Chelsea to take the Croatian across London.

But with Manchester United ready to make the 26-year-old a target in the summer, Pienaar fears Modric will once again be tempted.

“Luka is a top player for Spurs and if he leaves it is hard to say what will *happen there,” said Pienaar.

“He is such an important member of the team. Tottenham will want to keep him at the club, but it is difficult when a player like him wants to move on.

“As a player only a few *opportunities to move on come up in your life, so I can see it from both sides.

“It was hard for Luka at the start of the season because he was thinking about his *future. But he is a good *professional and after the chance to leave Spurs passed he did everything he could for the team. He is that kind of guy.

“That’s why the other players like him so much. But I understand from my own experience that if a good *opportunity is blocked by your club, it can be hard to concentrate.”

Pienaar has returned to Everton* after limited playing time at Spurs under Harry Redknapp. But he’ll be cheering on his former team-mates when they *attempt to haul in the two Manchester clubs at the top of the table when they face Liverpool at Anfield tomorrow.

Pienaar added: “It was hard for me at Spurs. I got injured and I never really got a chance because they were playing so well. But I have asked for tickets off some of the guys so that I can support Tottenham at *Liverpool!”

Very disappointed with this from Pienaar. I'm a fan of his and think he could have been a very useful squad player for us in the second half of the season, but this interview smacks of him stirring shit simply because he's not in N17 for the time being and wouldn't have to face any Tottenham fans in the near future. Not good, and to be honest after it seems that it was him who forced through a loan move away from the Lane rather than the club pushing him out, he's burnt his bridges a bit with me after this: hope we win something without him to show him what he's missing and what Modric is enjoying.

Just telling it how it is imo

No matter what Pienaar says or what he does will effect what Modric wants to do.

Modric isnt going to stay at WHL for the rest of his career, Ronaldo left ManYoo, Modric will do the same.

Get used to it, then it wont hurt as much when it happens.

We're not paying his wages now. And how does it look like sour grapes?

Bet you didn't even read it.

I see nothing wrong w/ what Pienaar said. He is just telling it like it is and reflecting on his own past experiences in a similar situation.

If anything, I came away liking Pienaar a bit more after the article. He didn't take any shots at the manager or club as to why he didn't succeed here like most players this day do and I like the fact he wants to be present at the upcoming game to cheer on his former teammates.

Typical over the top Mirror headline in a piece which could just as easily be called "Old boy Pienaar will chear Spurs on at Liverpool".

Pienaar is alright. Decent player and put in a couple of good games for us. The only thing wrong with his signing is that he was surplus to requirements before he even signed. No idea why we did go for him. Nothing to do with his quality, we just had ample bodies already.

Bit of a waste of a yr for him. At least he got to taste the CL I guess.

And yeah, not sure Modric goes this summer, good chance of it I guess, but unless we suddenly become the juggernaut of English football between now and the summer of 2013, chances are he'll be elsewhere.

Sucks but there you have it.

That appears to be the consensus on here too. It's actually the Mirror that's "stirring the Modric pot".

The Mirror are only reporting, I don't see that they have offered an opinion urging Modric to go or anything like that.

Depends entirely on what questions they asked him. Leading ones, I'm sure.
Not the first time the gooner-loving football hacks at the Mirror have written a "let's unsettle Spurs" article the day before we play a big game.
And it certainly won't be the last.
Just wait and see what they come up with on the eve of the NLD.

Pienaar hasn't said anything that all us fan know already...the papers (Mirror is an Arsenal supporting agent lol) are desperate for a story.

I don't know why we even bother discussing tabloid stories, half of them are twisted and the other half are flat out lies.

Let's just carry on enjoying our team while it is doing so well.

Nothing wrong here.

I think Pienaar was brough in to cover either wing but the problem was both our wingers are quick and direct. Playing Pienaar there changes our dynamic. If Bale or Lennon are out Krancjar has shown he has better skills than Pienaar and is more useful going forward.

We all Modric wants to leave. He's giving us a good season though so hopefully we'll have plans in place for some summer buys.

Pienaar gave an honest interview and spoke of his experiences. He left Everton for a chance at a club challenging for honours so he is speaking of what he has been through. Nothing wrong with that at all.

I don't get it, what did he say that was wrong? Nothing, nothing at all.

Some people are just very sensitive to these matters - could easily say the same if Wenger and Van Persie go in the summer so just a complete non-story.
