Do you think he’s gone there because the coach has a similar philosophy of playing out from the back?
Ange is going to want AP to be confident and comfortable playing football a certain way…and I’m just curious as to whether Argyle are the choice of loan because of their ambition to play football from deep?
I think this will be the case. Also Ian Foster and Ashley Philips are aware of each other through the England Under/junior teams. But you probably know that.

Wonder if he does well if we put the breaks on any other CB? Could be on the fence about it either way. Would love to see Devine and Phillips come into the squad behind the CB unit and Maddison/Kulu at cam but also completely understand wanting them to keep playing 90s every week.

Tough call
A good loan would go a long ways towards making that happen, with Dorrington training with the first team this year, and going out on loan next season.

Was superb against Leeds yesterday, like a one-man fire brigade. Looked absolutely knackered when he came off after 85 mins.

Agreed. He was also in pain after a challenge late in the game.

A real shame that he didn't get Dier's minutes in the league this season, but really promising signs going forward.

I have to agree. I still think he needs this loan, but a little Premiership experience would have made him stand out even more at Plymouth.

Playing for us when we had those injuries would have been a huge risk. Our defenders had a tough job and were pretty exposed, he could have easily been forced into a bunch of mistakes and ruined his confidence

Couldn't find a stream to watch the game against Swansea yesterday, but sifting through the match reports it seems Phillips had another man-of-the-match performance as Argyle posted their first away win of the season. No mention of Devine in any reports I found, except to mention he was subbed at 75 mins for fresh legs.

Exactly. Not playing him was about protecting him from a near impossible situation. Let him smash this loan, do well in training and maybe he cements that 4th CB spot with us next season. Not bad for a 19 year old. A few games here and there, minutes seeing out games etc adding to his experience. If he's not getting enough minutes then maybe a suitable prem loan can be arranged.

Everyone paid to do this sort of thing seems to think he has a really big future so let's not hamper it needlessly by sacrificing him for the short-term.

Club has done exactly the right thing so far.

I agree with you but would also say that I don't think we've started with a teenager in the league since Oliver Skipp in 2018. United are playing against West Ham at the moment with two in one game.

Mainoo made a significant error in one of his first games against West Ham away and since then he is going from strength to strength.

I think Mainoo was more of a desperation move from ETH than anything else. He had no other midfield options and went with a kid who was smashing things at a lower level. I do think that we could have given Phillips some minutes but the situation we were in wasn't likely to be conducive to his development. In a settled team alongside Romero or VDV I could've seen him given a chance.

On appearance alone he reminds me of Van Dijk. Just has that look of a colossus but not just due to his height but he’s built like a brick shithouse.

He made two sub appearances during the 2nd half of last season with Blackburn.

Really nice to see that he seems to have developed a lot in only a couple of a months through training with the first team.

Phillips with the assist as Plymouth equalise. Plymouth had a free kick out wide which was knocked to the back post where Phillips was and with a cushioned volley knocks it back for Galloway to score
