I know this might sound strange but £2 million rather than 3 might be better for them if they get it in a lump sum rather than spread over three years. The Venkys financial situation vis a vis Indian regulations might be relevant.
But what do I know?
This is a fair point.

Inflation and interest Costs would have to be terrible for that to be the case.

Good point.

On the incomings front, Spurs thought they had a deal in place to sign the 18-year-old Blackburn Rovers central defender Ashley Phillips for £3 million plus another £2 million in add-ons. However, Blackburn have upped the asking price to £5 million plus £4.5 million in add-ons as they seek to ease their financial troubles. Despite the difference in asking price, there is still confidence that a compromise can be reached.

Blackburn's asking price is bizarre if the release clause trigger & fee rumored is accurate.. which leads me to believe it's not.

I imagine given his age they believe they could claim additional fees at a tribunal above the release clause (if like you say it is what was reported). In which case they might be chancing that Spurs wouldnt want to go through a protracted legal case to determine a fair price and trying to get us to settle at a higher cost. We should find an agreement and i'm sure sell-on % is worth as much as appearance bonuses for an 18 year old.

I think tribunals are only for out-of-contract players under a certain age (23? 24?). If he's got a release clause then they have to accept bids equal to or above the release clause. Otherwise it's not a release clause!

Surely we could offer Blackburn a young player alone as a sweatner? They are in financial trouble so won’t be buying any players . Pretty sure we have a couple that could do a job in the championship and would benefit us also

Someone mentioned earlier that they want to reduce squad size/wage bill so offered players wouldn’t work in this instance.

I did say that he had a release clause.

They were hoping another club came in and bid for him.

As I said, tough luck.

If true, then it's a tad dumb really, as they will have had to pay his (admitedly probably quite low) wages for the last few weeks at a time when they seem desperate for money!

The kind of dumb which took a Premier league club down to 15 years of championship football via a year in League 1 so pretty much yep.

Newcastle could be in for him, and also details of Blackburn demands with add-ons.
That looks like a story created to force a bidding war before Friday. Didn’t he already do a medical with us? If so I’d think it’s pretty likely we’d be able to wrap this up.

Reportedly had one, don't think anything was posted to say it was done or anything concrete that it had been completed.

Pretty sure the journo who broke the story that Blackburn disagreed about the clause, when others were saying it was done, said that the medical had already been done too.

Why would anyone bid for him honestly? The only chance to try and tempt would be to offer him higher wages.
