Alonso, and that's about it. Young and Delph have been good for the Manchester clubs, but not categorically better than Ben imo.

It's strange to see the criticism here. He's been outstanding this season. You can go on about needing elite fullbacks, but Ben has been performing at an elite level this season.

I rate Ben but feel against the truly elite clubs he can struggle - I thought he was poor over the two Juve games for example

Against 80% of our opposition he is impressive, consistent and good defensively and offensively but still some questions re his all round physicality against the very best wide players

He will always be underrated because he’s not the quickest but considering he’s been played constantly for roughly a calendar year and been very good for the entire time, I think people need to accept that he’s our first choice and rightly so.

Hes not good enough.
I genuinely do not understand how you can watch our games this season and come to that conclusion. If he's not good enough then pretty much every other LB in the league isn't goof enough as he's been better than almost all of them.

Agree. I don’t think his ability is the problem. His attributes might be.

Poch likes his wings to be quick and get up and down the line constantly.

In that respect we have been spoilt with Walker and Rose.

Davies has played well this season.

The question is whether Poch wants to bring in full backs mirroring Walker and Rose or adapt to what we have now.

If pace in a WB was really that important to him he wouldn't have even bought Davies and even more so Trippier.

The reason Son has done so well is because Davies let's him have the space out wide, Ben also let's Jan have a few more forward runs than before

The boy is from Neath (one of the most glamorous places you’ll ever visit) but he’s also hard as nails.

Was easily the best back up LB in the league when we signed him but now he’s one of the best LB’s in the league and one of our most consistent performers.

I think Ben Davies is the player I've ever been the most wrong about (maybe besides writing off Harry Kane back in 2013 when he was just Harry). Davies has had a run of 12-14 months at a level I had no idea was possible for him.

Only Azpilucueta, Walker and Cresswell (5) have assisted more goals from the defence than Davies (5) this season.

Proper Spur (y)

"We all want the best for this Club as does everyone involved and if you are not on the pitch or on the bench and not playing, it doesn’t matter, because every player is there every day and as much part of the team as the players who play most weeks. Without them, it doesn’t work, we don’t have the same training, the same intensity and that’s the feeling we have throughout the squad. That’s been huge this season.

"Everyone is settled and that shows on the pitch in our performances - everyone wants the best for this Club.

"The emotions at Chelsea when we scored the goals, after the game, that was real. This is our team. This is what we want to do. It’s one Club, players, staff, fans and everyone has one goal and that’s to push us forward and wins like that make it feel all the more special."

I think Left Back, or Wing Backs as they are now called, get recognised for their offensive play these days, and little is spoken about the defensive side of the game. Young and Alonso are prime examples of this, not the best defenders in the league but great going forward. We used to say the same about Walker, and his speed gets him out of trouble, and when we said trouble it was really his bad positioning or defensive thinking we were talking about, but of course, we grew to love him because of his attacking prowess and the damage he could cause! And that is why City bought him.

Davies, on the other hand, is a probably a slightly better defender than an attacker, and Rose when in form is a better attacking player than Davies. The thing I think Poch likes about Davies, and what makes him a good choice for LB, WB whatever you want to call him, is he is consistent. he doesn't make too many mistakes, and he can always pull off a moment of brilliance with a great cross, and of course, he always works very hard. he can play in a 3 or 4 and he seems to have good communication with whomever he is playing within that back 3/4!

@leonspurs care to elaborate on what you disagree with about this statement? Do you have any argument which suggests he Davies is not our first choice left back?

Was disagreeing with your statement that he has not had a constant amount of playing time in the last year, not that he is our main left back at the moment. I actually think he is a fantastic player who through hard work and a bit of patience and the right approach, to get where he is today. I do feel though that full back is the one position were we dont really have first choice players, as much as the other positions in the team. It is the one position that our manager in my opinion does chop and change on who he feels is best suited to who we are playing.

The not was a a mistake, duly amended. Though the tone of the rest of my post clearly implies that I believe he has played well, deserves to be first choice and is in fact first choice.

Well we can both agree that he deserves to be in the position that he is in within the team:D

This is not a overreaction, he’s nowhere near good enough to be starting for us

How can we think we can win the league with him as our LB?

I appreciate what he’s done for us, fighting his way to a starting spot but it’s time we sell him

We should also sell Rose, we need 2 new LB imo

Grimaldo, Tierney, Shaw, Alex Telles
2 of them would be perfect or at least one of them

Both Ben and Rose's form ebbs and flows over a season.

Ben had a super hot patch last season and was on a roll.

It's just the way it is with these two...they just need to get going properly and gain rhythm.
