A lot of talk about how he will play against a low block and in tight spaces. I think we have to realise that probably half of our league games this year aren’t going to be against sides low blocking us. City, Arsenal, Liverpool, United, Chelsea, Brighton, Newcastle and possibly Villa will not just camp 10 men behind the ball.

Perhaps Johnson can be more of a threat than Kulu in these types of games? Maybe against the low block Kulu’s creativity will see we him starting - many want him tried as a creative 8.

It’s a squad game and we should think holistically about it. At the moment the ST/RW spots lack pace and goal threat - Johnson has shown he can provide this to a certain degree. Maybe he can step up his game in a better team and as he matures, he’s only just turned 22.
What sorcery is this , different tactics and players suited best against varying opposition - spot on !!

You mention Kulu who has 7 goals and 4 assist over 1 1/2 seasons in the PL. Johnson had 8 goals and 3 assist on a much worse side who only scored 38 total goals. So how has Kulu proved it when Johnson matched his output playing with worse players in less games?
Kulusevski has 7 goals and 15 assists from 48 PL games for us, that's just under a goal contribution every other game. If you're going to criticize, at least do so by fact-checking first.

Doesnt matter if hes worth 20 or 50, if the manager wants him we should be doing all we can to get him.

I think people will be surprised by how good Brennan Johnson is if he signs
Like they were with Maddison and Kulusevski and Bentancur etc....

Then we'll get the "I was so wrong about...., didn't know he was so..."

The problem is people don't watch these players, we're linked and they go watch a game (after we're linked) or watch a few you tube clips and make snap decisions.

In Brennans case Forest played Arsenal the other day and he was living off scraps and missed a chance. People see this (or a few yt vids) and make a snap judgement.

Maddison, Johnson and Douglas Luiz all caught my eye in recent years, so when I happened to watch a Leicester/Forest/Villa match I start to pay more attention.

Most of the time it means nothing, because I have watched Thiago Silva at Chelsea, TAA at Liverpool and Casemeiro at United and think they are top class... but not only does everyone know this, there is absolute no chance they will sign for Spurs.

But if you ask me about anyone from abroad the probability is I know nothing about them and I make snap decisions based off a few YT vids.

I watch loads of football, loads but when I say watch I mean it's on as I have a toddler running round and I'm doing stuff. Too many get opinions based on these charts that are all the rage and youtube clips.

Can anyone who has seen him play a lot compare him to another player? Most people are saying he's a very quick wing/forward who finishes well but isn't a tricky/1v1 winger. Sounds like Walcott?

I've said a couple of times he reminds me of a shitter Walcott. In the game v us last season that's exactly what he looked like.

Despite that, I am not against the signing.

I’m not saying he’s a bad player here but is he a definite upgrade on Kulu? For me he isn’t and we shouldn’t be trying to sign someone for that position who isn’t IMO!

We do this all the time signing squad players and most of the time we are lumbered and can’t sell them on.

Johnson looks a lot better statistically if you look at his output vs how often he receives the ball, since currently he receives it less than almost any winger in Europe.

Tottenham Hotspur are still some way off agreeing a fee for Brennan Johnson, as Nottingham Forest are completely unmoving from £40m basic price for the forward. The stand-off could yet see Chelsea in late on, as they retain an interest in the 22-year-old.

With a lot of the major clubs still looking at attacking signings in terms of wide players and No.9s, Johnson is seen as a player whose versatility and pace up front are of huge value and Ange Postecoglou is hugely keen.

Personal terms will not be a problem and Johnson is willing to go to Spurs, but negotiations between the London club and Forest are understood to have been hugely frustrating.

Chelsea are nowhere near so advanced, and haven't got to that stage, as they survey potential attackers. The club are prioritising an out-and-out centre-forward but there are not too many obvious choices available, and there is a belief in the market they will move for Johnson late on in the window if his future is not yet agreed.

It is therefore a deal that could go to the very last hours of the window.

Across the summer regarding the striker options at each club, Spurs sold Harry Kane to Bayern Munich while Chelsea are still looking to offload Romelu Lukaku. Forest signed Chris Wood on a permanent deal from Newcastle, having had him on loan last season

That doesnt sound like us!

Then go for players of a similar profile. Don't switch to a target who is a completely different profile. That's the kind of error we always make with our squad building.

But isn't this a profile that you are wanting, rather than one that is obviously something Ange wants?

Excellent post and it is true.

Even against United during the first half we had a lot of fast transitions where Son slowed it down or Deki came inside a bit too much.

Johnson will have taken the ball further wide in these instances so I am sure he would have had a positive contribution in that game.

Even in the second half when we had more of the ball, space was there for Deki to attack.

If you watch any of these coaching platform sites, there is a lot of work done on speed of offensive transitions as it's something all teams need to do.

Of course, you will come up against low blocks from time to time, whether it is a team that totally uses it or they do it to see out a game, but I think it'll be good to have different tools.

You should be his agent "Brennan is like a shitter Theo Walcott". I know I'm sold 😜

In terms of the ideal Ange winger this guy's profile is way more like what I'd expect.

Much more of a tricky dribbler than Johnson.

I would make the point that Ange doesn't seem to have only one exact ideal player for the wing positions. and that he seems to like different types of threats as options, depending on the opposition / game situation.

This is pretty good.

and this is a summary from his time at Lincoln. (It makes my Walcott comment sound miles off the mark)
