What's really good is this indicates we had our primary targets and went out and got them. No plans Bs or moving down the list.

Yes this is huge. Some things we have been calling for a long time:-

1) Secure plan A targets
2) Start making a net transfer outlay
3) Sign players in preseason (still a bit of work here!)

I definitely think we've gone up a level this summer. This is what's needed to have us competing for trophies, and finally winning some. I really hope Poch is happy, although I'm sure he's as annoyed about us at missing out on Dybala (not at the club).

As it happens, the 2 players who we bought in yesterday wouldn't have been in involved in pre season anyway. GLC had the copa america and has only just returned to training. Sessegnon got injured during the summer and I think is still injured. We could afford to wait until the end of the window for those 2. We got Nodombele in early.

This!!!
Poch should be very happy, albeit we left two late.
That’s why this window is such a success, we got who we wanted.
And if you add the Lo Celso fee to our incomings list we’ve spent the most in the league.
We should all be delighted, Dybala has clouded judgement

Do you think if we had signed Grealish last summer that we would have gone after him?

Now that he is in, this thread should be in the hall of fame. Specifically due to the plane tracking yesterday.
What do Sting, Spandau Ballet, Seal, Stone Roses and Sam Sparro have in common?

Correct! All their names all begin wi-- nah... they've all released tracks containing the word GOLD!

@WhiteDane now has his first of - hopefully - many :D

Good little write up about Lo Celso, I've had a few debated with people suggesting he can play in the 2, can't see it myself but I do think we were using the diamond with him in mind.
I think with a pure DM Lo Celso could be good in a 2, but I think Winks increasing importance kind of rules that out. I’m almost certain it’s going to evolve into Winks at the base, flanked by Lo Celso and Ndombele with a front three ahead which will sometimes be a diamond, sometimes be two wide forwards and one central.

Yeah I'm adamant on the Winks / Ndombele duo in midfield, I've said a few times I think we replicate the juventus team which got to the final with Pirlo which was

Pirlo
Marchisio Pogba
Vidal
Morata Tevez

I actually wonder within that set up whether Dele is better in the Pogba role as his traits are similar to the responsibilities Pogba had back then with Lo Celso in the Vidal area. What you say about Wide Forwards is quite interesting because Lo Celso has proven for Betis he can lead the line and if we're struggling for width in a game he can easily push up as the forwards split, would certainly make it harder for teams to man mark Kane out of a game that's for sure. Really excited, Lo Celso offers so much tactical flexibility and I love that none of the media fully realise the scope of what a coup this is.

There must be something in the water around Rosario. The amount of high quality footballers from that area is crazy.

Totally agree with this. Ultimately it's fluid, but I'm guessing we'll see combos (all with a 4 man defense) including:

----- Kane --- Son/Moura

---------- AM
Lo Celso ---- Ndombele
--------- Winks

and....

---------------- Kane

Son/Moura --- AM/GLC--- GLC/AM

-------- Winks -------- Ndombele

Apart from my hilariously shitty jokes, this is one of the reasons SC is so good. Insightful discussions about football. Thanks.

He looks a really decent acquisition- his versatility and ability will give us an edge missing from last year

As you both rightly point out, Lo Celso’s flexibility gives us options. I think we’ll take a while to figure out quite his best role and position, as he has a varied skill set and does many things to a high level. My expectation is that ultimately he’ll settle into a 3 man midfield, to the left of Winks with NDombele to the right, but he could happily play in any of the front 4 roles in a 4231, and likewise spearhead a diamond in a 41212/ 4312. I think to get the best out of what is going to be a new look midfield, we should start using the players in the projected combination as early as we can to shake off any teething issues and build cohesion, I’d go as far to say that v Villa we should kick off with Winks at the base, Lo Celso and Ndombele either side and whatever three front man combo suits Kane the best. I know it’s early but Villa, newly promoted and with loads of new signing to bed in, is as nice a match as possible to chuck the boys in at the deep end.

i think people seem to forget about sissoko he was our player of the season last year and his partnership with Ndombele will be crucial in a lot of games next season
