Clubs actually aren't allowed to hold back players from international duty, not even when injured. If the national team call them up players are to to join and be assessed by the national team medical personnel. Of course most of the time the two parts communicate with each other and come to a solution.

Dont believe SAF ever got that memo.

He definitely didn't care and had little respect for national teams, especially England.
But the NT managers could have forced players to turn up if they wanted, they probably didn't want to take on the challenge, Ferguson was also very good at getting the player on his side.

Anyone see how he did?
He was fouled three times in his first three minutes. Was a nice enough cameo, kept the ball moving, did Lo Celso things. I might have missed the last five minutes as eyes were drooping as game finished at 1am here. At one point Argentina were on the attack and next thing I know Messi’s being interviewed post-match. He didn’t comment on Gio’s performance and how he’ll make a great Maddison back-up if he can stay fit though.

I really hope we sell him, it’s annoying how he makes the internationals more often than not, yet isn’t fit for spurs who pay his wages.

I’ve hoped he would come good, his a talented lad, but his always injured.

N’dom and him are an example of why money doesn’t buy success, good scouting and luck are huge factors

One thing I forgot to mention was that he played more of an 8 role than as a 10, but I imagine you kind of worked that one out for yourselves what with Messi in the same team.

If we can get a replacement I’d say sell in Jan and definitely in the summer. Just unreliable.
Yea starting to agree with this.

Really like him as a player but no where near reliable enough, actually completely forgot we had him recently whereas was very excited about him under Ange this summer.

After initially being very bullish on Gio, I eventually came to think he needed to go.

But when Ange came in and we had our big clearout and a complete restructuring of our XI, I started to think (hope!) he could be a Madders competition/backup. I looked at him with new eyes, and I really wanted him to succeed!

Alas...

He can't stay fit. He looks annoyed and unmotivated at Spurs. He doesn't perform in the few times he's been called upon.

I'm disappointed, have to be fair. Yes, it's been a roller coaster with this guy, but finally I'm done with him. Time to go.

IIRC we've only actually seen 45 minutes of AngGio before he got injured at Fulham? And we don't know how much of that 45 minutes he played with the injury?

Yes, he needs to be able to stay fit to be of any use of us. But he certainly wasn't looking annoyed and unmotivated in pre-season and even if he did maybe his annoyance is at his own lack of fitness, surely it can't be with Ange?

He's definitely in Last Chance saloon, but he's surely got until January, if not the summer, to prove he can stay fit and play a role in the new era?

The thing is in the past we scouted the player based only on footballing ability.

The mental aspect is so much more important. Bergwijn, Lo Celso and Ndombele (our pre Paratici big buys) were all flops.

Bergwijn couldn't settle and was constantly injured, Lo Celso always injured and Ndombele is Ndombele (no one is surprised he's now playing in Turkey).

Paratici is the best thing to happen to spurs in a long while. Only sign players with the right mentality (take note Manchester United)

To be fair, sometimes a players can be more injury prone in a different country/league because the speed and style of the league pushes you to have a slightly different body type. English football is very fast and non-stop and players usually develop a cross-country/middle distance build compared to La Liga which is more stop start where players tend to develop more muscle and use it more explosively.

If you are an elite athlete and your body type is not exactly right for your elite sport then the result is injuries

Wasn’t on the same wavelength as others but that’s understandable. Thought he showed some lovely moments on the half term and some good passes but also messed up that 1 big counter after a great run by him which was poor
What I loved was his work rate, he pressed constantly, through himself about even made a long run to throw himself into a key block on the edge of our area, he constantly moved and showed for the ball.
A lot to build on and hope he gets more football, would still love to see him get a chance with the first team but i know that sadly means no maddison who’s undroppable but if we need a goal in a game get him on at 8 with maddison

I thought he played well when he came on and when he was on the ball he was pointing to where he wanted players to go. He was trying to organise the team. I agree that he could play the 8 role. When Skipp came on for Sarr I thought Lo Celso would have made more sense as a replacement. Like you said he worked hard and he made a great block on the edge of our box to prevent a shot but he also can create.

In some games I would like to se Bissouma, Lo Celso and Maddison play together but I don't see it happening.

Thought on the break he played a nice ball through to Veliz but he hadn’t held his run and ran offside. There was another instance where he passed it straight out where it looked like Skipp had juststopped his run. Think he could do the number 8 role and would be a much better option than bringing Skipp on there.

Now would be a fantastic time for him to pull his finger out.

We all know he has the ability.

Personal opinion - Lo Celso will never make it in the PL. I don't think his game suits the league.

I would rather see us promote some youth or utilise other first team players in that position.
