If that means that we don't get CL this year, I could accept that to be in a better position for next season.
I don't think many of us were expecting top 4 back in August anyway.
No, you have to go for CL if there's a chance and we can't (intentionally) do anything that will imperil that.

So Lo Celso, assuming Ange thinks he helps the cause, stays unless there's a ready made replacement. Whatever we may lose in value from him staying on is dwarfed by what CL could bring.

The idea not getting CL will leave you in a better position is simply mad. We have to go for it.

And what our expectations were in August are irrelevant. It's a fallacy.

He's showed his quality recently, so a knock in training isn't going to change my mind that he's a good backup. Long term I don't think his heart is with the club so will likely not sign a new contract(if offered) and will be in the next round to be upgraded in the summer.

It sounds like he probably took a rough tackle from Cuti as he's getting the aggression out in training instead of today ;) Hardly something to beat him with if he'll be back within a week.

let's be honest its christmas Gio wants some family time and a move to barca. Suddenly a mysterious niggle appears after he was benched for Sarr after scoring in 2 out of 3 games. Lots of smoke.

I didn't mean to imply that we'd benefit from not getting CL and of course it's what we should be aiming at, if not more, I just think it's imperative this season.
For me, the most important thing is rebuilding the squad for Ange over these next two windows and setting the tone for the clubs future.

Still very much in the camp of “there’s likely a decent player in there, but the minute a decent offer comes in sell.”

Personally, I think that with the market as it is, we have to consider any half decent offer we get on a player that has no future at the club.
As with big Dav, I'd rather clear them out when the chance arises and suffer the short term consequences, than carry on with a bloated squad of players that we don't want, or can't shift.

It's not ideal but it's where we are, we've got to clear the space to be able to rebuild the squad.
I don't expect everyone to feel the same but that's my current stance at present, we can't keep hanging in to players "just in case".

Of course, ideally we'd sell and replace but I don't think we can afford not to sell if the opportunity presents itself.
It's not about a decreasing value for me, it's about the spaces in the squad and the need to clear the decks.

In this camp also, especially if Gios contract is up summer 2025 as others have said (unless we offer/he accepts an extension), we dont want to be a club that allows too many players with years left in the tank to just leave on frees, no club with any sense does.

A lot of people have been moaning about us letting Davinson go but when having watched Emerson and Davies cover, i'm not particularly convinced that having big Dav in there instead of Emerson would have gained us many, if any more points.

Running out of patience with this lad and his constant niggles. Same as Sess. Move him on.

Thought he looked very good when he was loaned to CP but I think he has regressed somewhat. Still a lot better than Skipp for me.
Doesn't help that he is a very underperforming chaotic side though. We have had players look poor in one system under one manager and look good in another. IF Ange wanted him and agreed to it then I'd back it.

Wouldn't see him displacing any of our best MFs, and for a squad depth option he'd cost an absolute fortune. Anyway, screw Chelsea. I don't want to help them one tiny bit.

I agree with this and while I've admittedly not paid that much attention to Gallagher, I have really seen anything that sets him above anything more than a decent player. Being homegrown is nice but he'd be an expensive squad option and for that, I'd rather look for younger, with higher potential in the Championship or somewhere.

Wonder if he could play as a 6 in this system.
I actually think that’s potentially not a bad idea. It would be about positioning more than tackling, but actually his passing and ball recovery stats are pretty good higher up the pitch. He’s got the technical ability to receive the ball and play though the press

I do understand where you're coming from and it would be a risk, no doubt about it.
Just that, for me, this is a rebuild season, a transitional one and if we ended up in 6th, I'd see that as a successful season this year.

The most important thing for me right now is to trim the squad and get in players that suit Ange/he wants.
If that means that we don't get CL this year, I could accept that to be in a better position for next season.

How is selling Lo Celso in January, at the expense of CL qualification, going to put us in a better position for next season?

Finishing in a CL spot would help us to attract a higher calibre of player next summer, which would leave us stronger for next season compared to not qualifying for CL. It would also boost our revenue for the 24-25 season by more than Lo Celso's transfer value + wages combined, so qualifying for the CL and having Lo Celso (or any other one player) rotting in the reserves would be better than selling him in January and missing out on CL.

This is even ignoring that Lo Celso had played pretty well for us recently and has demonstrated that he fits our system.
