I think it's horses for courses personally, but I do think far too much emphasis is being put on being able to play out like an outfield player. I'm not bothered if Vic can't ping a ball 40 yards to the wings as long as he's calm whilst being pressed and keeps the ball out of the net. I also think Ange's philosophy is quite different to Peps in that I think Ange wants us to play through the middle under pressure in order to draw players in create spaces in behind the pressing players to create overloads that way. pep draws them in and Ederson is then able to bypass them over the top and to the full backs. Newcastle are just more direct. All 3 systems work in their own way and are effective.

It's still the case for me though that my keepers primary attribute should be shot stopping, and that's why I'm happy with Vic over the other 2 mentioned.
Absolutely spot on sir!
Bit of a keepers Union on this but fundamentally it boils down to a keeper doing the goalkeeping basics right 99% of the time, if that means whacking it out of play when needed then so be it. Keep it simple, I don’t understand this whole nonsense of having to try and play out from the back all the time as some of the goals conceded from doing it are just awful.
Joe Hart wasn’t a bad keeper at Citeh when pep came in and ostracised him for Ederson who quite clearly is a failed outfield player who just happened to be a half decent keeper.
The thing that worries me though is that this ‘pep philosophy’ about keeping has filtered down to grassroots football and you’ve now got lads who are as young as seven or eight who are fantastic keepers being told they aren’t up to standard as they are not so good with the ball at their feet.
Give me a keeper who can do his job as opposed to a keeper who is then asked to play like a centre half any day of the week!

Our best player for first half of the season? Maybe because all the rest are banned or injured.

But if he maintains this kind of form, he’ll keep us there or there about for top four. He has been superb so far.

Brilliant signing, brilliant keeper. His shot stopping is phenomenal, so much so that I’m surprised when a shot gets passed him!

judging by the hugs after the game you can see that some of the senior players truly appreciate him and the job he has been doing

It all depends on level to be honest, the lower down the leagues keepers need to be physically strong, where as higher up, more emphasis on the technical abilities (which goes without saying really).

I have seen brilliant technical keepers just let go because they hadn't hit 6 foot before they were 16 too. One I know now playing step5 football but posted all over keeper socials etc, still at step 5 because he isn't over 6 foot tall.

My dad asked me yesterday why I wasn't as nervous as him whenever Everton were on the attack or we played out from the back every time. My main response was "I haven't felt this calm with a goalkeeper before.".

Yes he will still concede, but he tends to save more than he lets in.

Similar story to my wife’s godson, absolute unit and had been on the books at Luton for years but was then dropped at 16 because they felt he was too big. He’s built like a second row admittedly but it was devastating for him at the time, took him a couple of seasons to even bother putting a pair of gloves on again.

My new favourite game is watching MotD and looking out for goals conceded by other teams that Vic would have stopped. For example, both of the West Ham goals yesterday.

The save from Pedro as well where he tried to dink it over him was fantastic too, as much as Ekoku didn't want to say it was.
