He's not worth 40m. 30m with 1 year left is already pushing it tbh.
I couldn't care less if he's 'worth £40m' I'm not the club's accountant. However he is exactly what we need. This is a crucial position and we absolutely can't afford to screw up the position over a relatively small amount of money. We're not a poor club so should stop acting like one.

I'm personally waiting to hear how peoples' Celtic-fan mates rate him before forming an opinion. I don't know why they would know anything about him, but that's where I get my information these days.

Interested to know why you trust our scouts.
Because the ones we have in place right now have actually done pretty well in the last 18-24 months in my opinion. I really rate the vast majority of the signings made in that period, the only question marks I’d give are Richarlison (injury hit season, terrible luck, not played in his actual position which as a 9. He’ll come good IMO), Bryan Gil (not sure he’ll make it personally due to lack of physicality and pace) and Spence (think he’s got big potential personally and just needs some defensive coaching. His pace, skill and physical attributes are all great). Our scouts also identified the likes of Kvaratskheilia and Kim M-J long before they were well known and our board ignored them. Also like I said originally our head scout will know exactly what he’s doing with players from Italy

Yeah but we can't just overpay on every deal or we're gonna get bent over on every deal. We don't have limitless funds like the oil money clubs.

If we were a GK away from competing for a title - I would disagree with you here. No matter how many years left - a player that is the "final" piece is worth a lot.

But, we are a long way off from winning a title, and lots of holes to fill. The difference between Vicario and Raya, is unlikely to have any impact on our season in isolation, but the extra money saved could help get a key player across.

I mean if we're haggling over a couple of million then yeah, we're being stingy and should just pay up.

But if Brentford are not budging on 40m then fuck 'em. That's just a stupid price and I don't think we should pay it.

Also, while Raya would be a v.solid player to sign, it's not like he's a a VVD, Alisson type signing where you pay whatever it takes to get him. He's an above average PL keeper who is v.decent with his feet. He's like a 7-8/10 type signing.

Lloris : 8 penalty saves from 41 faced in 10 years of PL

Vicario : 8 penalty saves from 17 faced in serie A

Thats insane rate of 47% in top level football
Cue us being Spursy and not giving away a penalty for the next three seasons.

Raya for 40m
or
Vicario and Alex Scott for 40m

I know which route I would go down seeing the list of clubs interested and views of some in Italy.

If he is so highly rated I wonder why he is less than £20m?

I'm not one of those who has irrational rage because we're not getting the most expensive option we possibly can to replace Hugo, but it's intriguing that Empoli aren't trying to fleece us, because that is what foreign teams regularly try to do when their prize assets at targeted by prem teams.

I guess you could look at it that if we save nigh on £25m from the Deki deal and going Vicario over Raya then that might make a tangible difference in securing other targets such as Maddison, Tapsoba or an Alex Scott.
Also it's actually reassuring to move onto a different target (who fits the same profile as our supposed main target) quickly and decisively when we are being dicked about by a selling club. We've dragged out transfer sagas way too often and I think it unsettles the team particularly in pre-season

He'd still be the biggest sale in Empoli's history at £17m. Think you can still get a lot of bargains on the continent from smaller clubs.

How long does he have left on his contract could be a factor and the fact maybe only Italian teams are interested, so no Premier League premium?

My mate supports Empoli, says he's junk and to stay clear.
