Empoli 2021/22 : Back in serie A after winning promotion in 20/21
Goals scored - 50
Goals conceded - 70
League position -14
Only 2 other teams in league conceded more than them
Empoli 2022/23 :
Goals scored - 37
Goals conceded - 49
League position -14
Just 6 goals more conceded than top4 Milan.
So, its pretty clear, especially last season, Empoli were so defensive. They scored less & they conceded less to maintan same league spot.
To assess, How did Vicario play out from back, Why does Vicario push the shot into middle...does he come out for crosses ? All these are irrelevant questions.
When you have a team that only wants to defend at the back....and they defend in the box.... GK doesnt need to come out for crosses often as mostly it dealt by the 3CBs in front. GK will so many shots on goal, so there will be some shots spilling into center - its inevitable.
If you are going to assess Vicario at Empoli, then assess his shot stopping only. Everything else cannot be judged from his spell
Our scouts have made the call, lets hope they are right. We can only wait & see him in flesh. Then judge him fairly
I saw the Youtube clips as well and yes, he did seem to push shots back into a dangerous area but.....could it be looked at in a different way, i.e the saves were far better than 'routine or expected', so although the ball is then pushed back into a dangerous area, the % of chance a goal is scored from the follow up is significantly less than the chance of the ball having gone into the net from the original shot ? (i hope i've made that clear enough !).Still needs coaching imo. Pushing shots out into dangerous positions will cause a lot of problems. On the Youtube reels there's a lot of stuff he could have dealt with better. A goalkeeper taking possession of the ball is as effective as a player winning a tackle in that it's a turnover. Pushing it back out into play has a 50% chance of that, at best.
I know what you mean. To paraphrase Jack Nicklaus, "you concede 100% of shots on target that you don't save".I saw the Youtube clips as well and yes, he did seem to push shots back into a dangerous area but.....could it be looked at in a different way, i.e the saves were far better than 'routine or expected', so although the ball is then pushed back into a dangerous area, the % of chance a goal is scored from the follow up is significantly less than the chance of the ball having gone into the net from the original shot ? I also think we have to be conscious that they’re mostly highlights of his most impressive saves i.e. shots getting smashed in from all angles & distances which he managed to get a glove to.I saw the Youtube clips as well and yes, he did seem to push shots back into a dangerous area but.....could it be looked at in a different way, i.e the saves were far better than 'routine or expected', so although the ball is then pushed back into a dangerous area, the % of chance a goal is scored from the follow up is significantly less than the chance of the ball having gone into the net from the original shot ? Was in Italy at the weekend and asked my Inter supporting mate about him and he seemed to think we are getting in before them as he had been identified as a replacement for Onana should he go to Utd or elsewhere. Said he is a good keeper.I also think we have to be conscious that they’re mostly highlights of his most impressive saves i.e. shots getting smashed in from all angles & distances which he managed to get a glove to.
One would assume that such a highly rated keeper isn’t knocking standard shots back in to play at such a regular rate.

He's still got to arrive for his medical 3 times before he starts it.I would have thought the likes of Romano would have been trigger finger happy today to tell us medical had started
For context re all the comments about parrying back into dangerous areas, the same could be said for at least two or three of these saves (and that's out of only ten). I think we'd agree Ederson isn't too bad a reference point.
Your right, it’s like asking a fan who watches most premier league games about players we watch week in week out.Really don't get the overanalysis of a few saves on youtube versus the opinions of everyone that's watched him in Italy, which seems glowing. 100% you could pick a bunch of saves from the very best of keepers and even they're not dealing with 75% of shots perfectly. Nobody would.
