Arsenal replaced ramsdale for less.

This seems like something that should be coachable though, and also partly a question of adapting to a more physical league. And he’s been great in most other areas I think.

But we need to do something about it and “offering him more protection”, which some here suggest, surely can’t be the main solution. Maybe it can be a short term fix but ultimately Vic needs to command that area, it needs to be his domain.

Also his defenders need to have confidence in him, but if he’s regularly been targeted and he needs this “extra protection” that doesn’t really inspire confidence in him to control his own area.

Against Chelsea he needs a body in their for protection. Neville was even saying that he used to provide that for Utd's big keepers like Schmeichel, Howard and van der Sar. Neville is 5'10" but did the job, so it doesn't have to be a CB. If not, then every game for the rest the season will feature an opponent standing in front of Vicario at corners.

Surely this is something that the GK coach must have seen!!
Why has there been so little, if any, improvement?

Maybe he just cant put it into games, or he is now over thinking it so confidence has taken a massive hit!

I've had this into my son since he was tiny, defend your area and be horrible to anyone who comes near you in the 6 yard box, so it's definitely coachable

we definitely should be protecting him more, and we never seem to do the same tactics when attacking corners.
But when does any of these tactics become a foul on the GK nowadays? Genuine question as one of their goals was when White was backing in to Vic, forcing him back in to his own goal pretty much. Yeah he should be stronger and get more protection 100%, but GK get nowhere near as much protection as they used to

I’m willing to give him more time because this is his first seasons in the PL, a different ball game to Serie A.
He’s too nice and polite when standing with opposition players waiting for corners to come in.

He needs to develop sharper elbows and a no nonsense get out of my f*cking way and personal space and I’m taking no shit attitude to opposition players when they try to crowd him. They will soon get the message.

We could start in training by deliberately getting a narked grumpy Romero invading his personal space at corners at Hotspur way and insisting he toughens up and shoves Romero out of the way and tells him to get a he f*ck out of he way no nonsense style. If he can do it against Romero he he rest will be a cake walk.

Pretty much every team have put someone in front of him and put the ball into the six yard box since the Man City game. We are basically shitting ourselves on every corner. I like Vicario but unless this is fixed by the end of the season it undoes all the good stuff from the first 20 games and we will need to look elsewhere for next season.

I think he's a very very good goalie who is not good at controlling things from corners. I am sure others will analyse and know a lot more than me about the intricacies of this.
however it looks like he is poor at iniatiating movement off his line when the ball comes in from corners.
the rest of his game is good. Very good.
Surely the above issue is coachable though, right ?

I really like him as a player and think its extremely likely he can be coached to be better at this and stronger in commanding his area. As others have mentioned some gym work to bulk up a little in his arms/shoulders could also really help.

This isnt like Lloris with his distribution which remained below average for a keeper who was otherwise very good until his final year or 2 with us.

Spoken about this for months , I hate keepers that don’t leave their line for crosses , how many did Raya catch Sunday , albeit they were awful crosses but he took command , vicario is almost always rooted to his spot and when he does come out he punches the ball . He is a fantastic keeper and I’m sure this is something he can work on and get a lot better at . Chelsea have some very big defenders so I’d be shocked if we don’t have a different set up for Thursday .

Easy when there is no coherent movement from the opposition blocking him and the taker pinpointing specific area's. We just lump it in and hope someone gets on the end of it.

Its the zonal marking which isnt helping.

Was at the game on Sunday and that group of Arsenal players surging to the back post was causing panic and confusion.

I feel sorry for him ,sure he could arguably be more physical in pushing people but he has been targeted and fouled at times only for referees to ignore it.

Even if our keeper coach is rubbish I'm sure Fraser Forster is talking to him about the issue but he needs more protection from the refs and if he played for Liverpool or arsenal their managers would be going ballistic and getting it and he also needs us to protect him more even if we just simply do the same thing in attacking set plays to force the ref to take action ( because if one of ours was doing what White was Sunday Oliver would have been blowing like mad).

I have serious reservations about him but maybe he just needs a year to get use the the physical nature of the premier league and he will be better from corners next season. If not then Summer 2025 we will need an upgrade.

He is an excellent keeper and has been a brilliant signing. The team need to help him more and of course he can improve in some areas but generally he has been superb.

No way could we wait until the end of next season. If he can't fix this we need to look at options this summer.
