He has shown glimpses in the last two games. Glimpses of the player he could become.

I've been one of his biggest critics, but these glimpses he shows for 15 minutes of a game, he needs to show much more often if he's going to be a regular first team player for us who can actually deliver what we need.

I hope he can now put together a consistent run of good performances. CM is absolutely his to claim at Spurs this season. Unfortunately I still have major doubts he will be consistently good enough for us.

His good performances have been far too infrequent. Yes, injuries are an excuse, maybe, but he now needs to start realising his potential and delivering. He should be really influencing and running games from CM.

He needs to take more risks, he's way to0 complacent on the ball. We need to drive forward from midfield.

Still not nearly consistent enough for me, he shows small glimpses like today but I've still never seen him get anywhere near taking a game by the scruff of the neck and dominating it, has much to do to win me over in the same way he seems loved by many.

Completely agree. He is really risk averse. He just seems to play too much within himself. If he doesn't start stamping his authority on games and believing he can run games, he will never fulfill his potential. He certainly has the talent on the ball, but at the moment he isn't nearly doing enough. We do need him to drive forward and deliver, because if he can't step up, we are really screwed in CM.

Too risk averse, which is frustrating because when he does open up he makes things happen. Hopefully as he grows in confidence he will be more ambitious more regularly and push the tempo a lot more than he currently does

Risk averse is definitely confidence for me and really probably just common sense from him. He’s only really been back 3 or 4 games. I don’t think anyone would yet say he is an established spurs player. Just sensible to play himself back into form. Sure more punch will come with confidence it’s just natural.

Of course he’s going to be risk averse - just missed nearly a year of football and doesn’t want to mess things up as gets back into a rythym

Think he will gradually grow in confidence just like how he was before his injury

For all we know he still might be having a bit of lingering pain / hesitation from the injury - bad soft tissue ankle injuries take a long time to get over

I imagine he's petrified of getting injured again, it's going to take time.

Without that injury I'm convinced he would of started in the centre of midfield for England in the summer. Yet, one more big injury and he might struggle to even stay in the premier league as it's such an important time for his development.

He's certainly got the tools to succeed though. We saw that last season.

He's always been risk averse. Always played within himself even before the injury so it's a bit of a leap of faith to think he will suddenly play braver and start taking games by the scruff of the neck. Until he actually shows he can do it, I think those who doubt he can do it are fair in our reservations.

The main thing for me is that irrespective of fitness or form, he actually looked more confident yesterday than he has for a while..When he came back from injury his confidence took a knock and a few iffy performances (and crowd reaction) compounded that.

Hopefully he will feel part of the team again now and his performances can grow from here. (Barring England damaging him :cautious:)

I've always thought he was a cracking player to be honest. Coming back from that long injury must have drained his confidence a lot. He's only has a few hours back from that.

I think he's going to become a star player for us over the next few years.

Yes, I think it was quite disgraceful how crowd got on his back given he is a young inexperienced player learning his trade and needed encouragement, not morons giving him stick, which isn't very constructive at all.

I think he has the ability to be as influential as Carrick/Modric were for us. His problem will be convincing those who don’t understand about football of his quality. Just as Modric and Carrick were criticised for passing simply or not getting enough goals or assists so will he. Many fans won’t understand how important it is for a team to always have a player who is constantly available for a pass, can take the ball in the half turn, will always make the right pass at the right speed, can wriggle out of tight situations etc.. i’m convinced Poch values these abilities though so we’ll see him more often than not over the next few years

I understand football and have played professionally. I thought I'd say that because based on some opinions on here, if you don't think Winks is world class then you don't know football.
I like Winks. I like his tenacity. But comparisons to iniesta or modric are absolutely ridiculous, regardless of his injury. He's a decent player. Would any of the other big clubs in England buy him? No. Would any other big clubs in Europe buy him? No.
I would love him to surpass what I think he can do, but for me he's a Ryan Mason. Who I also liked because of his tenacity. At best maybe a Scott Parker in his prime, but he's a hell of a way to go to get to that level.
Winksy is a Spurs lad and I love that. I also think it's important for first team players to understand Spurs like he does.

A little confusing as you say he's world class in the second sentence...

I’m sure much would have been said about Kane after same number of appearances. How many actual PL starts has the guy had can’t be many maybe 15-20. You really need to give it a season before you judge. But he’s way above mason imo. It’s weird how some players get a negative wrap for no real reason. I kind of thinks winks falls into this category, and I’m really not sure why. Trust me if he started getting the odd goal people would suddenly change their opinion even though that’s not his game. Just seems players profiles get wildly overrated with a few goals. It’s mainly why people are suddenly rating lamela.
