We need to get serious about drink driving in this country. Behaviour like Hugo's should result in a large amount of community service, not just a monetary penalty.

Yeah, fining these people is not a dterrent.

Get them cleaning up shit and the like

If I was Hugo, I would use this time to graciously suggest to the club that they give the Captain's armband to Harry. Release a joint statement in which he accepts that retaining it, given what has happened, would be unbecoming of him. Note that Harry, who has been Captain in waiting for a year or so, is the right person to lead the club out onto the pitch. It would go someway towards rehabilitating his image in the eyes of fans and the wider football community. Accepting responsibility, means accepting it fully.

Harry will probably get it and I don't doubt his credibility but not now for me. Already feel we pander too much to him.

Vertonghen deserves it. He's been the captain in waiting for years with his leadership on the field and reliability.

Apprently PL club protocol is a £300k fine? The clubs fine more than the courts in this case? I mean, seriously? Step your game up, court of law.

6 months as a West Ham player? That would prevent any top Premier League player from drunk driving ever again.

Lloris, £50k fine and 20 month driving ban.
Alonso: €61k fine and a suspended 3.5 year driving ban. He also killed someone.

Wild.

He should have been banned for 3 years.

We can be here all day discussing the punishment, it's totally subjective and down to the court at the end of the day. No point playing judge, jury and executioner especially when there are other cases which has caused more fatal outcomes which has had similar punishments.

He’s been a dick that’s for sure and his actions are indefensible.

The only thing I’d say to try and make sense of this is that alcohol affects different people differently depending on their bodies and how much they usually drink. In a best case scenario for what happened, maybe he doesn’t usually drink much, had a few glasses of celebratory champagne with his French mates and didn’t realise how bad he was until he got in the car and was sick.

It goes without saying he shouldn’t have got in the car after a few glasses of alcohol. It also goes without saying that if that was the case, the moment he realised he’d had too much and was sick, he should’ve pulled over and left the car. He’s fucked up so much here but the reason I’m posting this is because it’s so unlike what we ‘know’ about Lloris and I’d like to think this is what happened as opposed to a meathead going out with the plan of getting pissed and not having a care in the world about who it affects if he crashes etc.

Just to make it clear, I’m not defending what he did but I just hope it was a one off and the way it panned out before he got nicked wasn’t the plan of the evening beforehand.

Luckily no one was hurt so hopefully he can put it behind him and put in a few good performances for us.

I can't quite put together the fairly limited amount of alcohol (yes, too much for driving...) and the sick, slurring and stumbling.

Doesn't sound like he had anywhere near enough for the latter unless he'd had double training that day, not eaten and doesn't normally drink... or am I missing something on that front?!

Seems a bit of a disconnect. Anyway, taxi next time please Hugo.
