As I posted in the front page news thread, Kasper Scmeichel's contract with Nice was terminated so there would be little or no competition.

I reckon he'll still join Nice after he's got his pay out from us! Not a coincidence Hojbjerg, Lloris, Dier didn't want to do Levy any favours

We signed a contract with them, it’s not playground football where we can ask someone to give up a years money as a favour.

I mean he came out publically saying he wanted to leave then turned down countless clubs….
So if you told your bosses you wanted to leave, you’d waive money owed to you?

My feeling is that Hugo thought the offers would roll in and they didn’t. He probably feels he is as good as ever, but the market hasn’t agreed. By the sounds of it he has been offered a a lot as backup or maybe from “lesser” clubs and no doubt lesser wages then he was expecting.

It’ll be interesting to see if he goes anywhere or takes the payoff and retires. All a bit of a sad ending really.

No but the compensation you pay to terminate a contract is never as much as the contract. Wages they'd be getting are no where near what we pay them currently so if they eft they would miss out on a fair amount of money! Hence the do a favour comment

Got a feeling the entire squad probably saw the treatment of Kane & got pissed off by it so this was a way of sticking it to dearest leader. Agreeing a deal then backing out of it all while banning him from the training ground was a shitty way to treat him.

Which is why I’m confused why they would do so.

We don’t owe it to him yet. It’s paid monthly in lieu of service.

If I told my boss I wanted to leave - after walking round the office telling everyone I’m going - would it then be reasonable to ask for my next years salary so I could go and immediately work for someone else and get paid twice?

No, but I thought the argument was that he should do us a favour by leaving immediately - without next years pay as he wouldn't have completed the contract and so wouldn't be paid the final year?

I'm obviously not the sharpest knife in the drawer . . .

See, this is a point that needs to be made. A rumor starts that Hugo (and others) are refusing offers to spite Levy. The rumor gets repeated enough that it becomes a “truth” in the sense that it is a shared belief. And so, a false picture of a player emerges, when in fact the real truth (as posted above) is actually quite reasonable. Not wanting to make a move based on limited info and with only an hour to decide is what most of us would do.

It's amazing that "reporting" has got to the stage where someone like Hugo feels the need to release a statement like this.

The thing is (and I disregard the rumours on social media as they are probably nonsense), I could understand if Lloris was a young player looking to buy into a long term project, but realistically this is his last move and he’s likely to be moving to be a number two, so I don’t quite understand the project and vision part as he’ll be hanging up his gloves soon.

A fair point. Maybe his thinking is that with a club like Nice, if he stays fit, he could be of value for to them for at least two years, if not longer. Hence the project and vision part. Either way, I don't begrudge the man wanting to be sure he is making the right move. I wouldn't take a job if someone phoned me up and gave me half the details and told me I have an hour to decide. I don't think anyone would.

Did he really turn down Nice, his boyhood club? either his retiring or going to Saudi for a payday surely, if his still here next week than its sickening
Why is it sickening?

The man is a club legend and always will be. I've no issue with him still being here.

He’s taking up a non-HG spot limiting our ability to buy in Jan and he’s going to collect £6-8m in wagers for the coming season where he himself acknowledges he has zero prospect of playing. He was offered a chance to play elsewhere but decided he’d rather Spurs pay him millions not to play.
He isnt taking up any spots in the squad if he isn't going to be registered. I agree on the wages but I'd be fairly surprised if his contract wasn't terminated by mutual consent within the next two weeks.

Would you give up £6-8m?

I'm still amazed he ever signed for us tbh. If he has a pension year watching from the stands, so be it. He's earned it.
