Look Hugo has had a relatively bad season which is funny because he started off well then had the drink driving fiasco which I think impacted on him far more than any of us would have thought.

I think he also looks exhausted mentally that is. Needs a summer off come back refreshed and play well...

Lloris' passing stats are always good (both for short and long passes), both because the way we play which leads to him making many passes, but also because he's pretty far from terrible when it comes to playing out from the back. There'll always be an element of risk attached to it, but the reason the best teams wont hoof the ball long, is because it's not a good way of building an attack. It's generally a guaranteed way of turning over possession. That's the reason we ourselves press high. To force long balls we can sweep up with ease.

Of course, some times a long ball to get out of jail will be needed, and in some games (like vs. Liverpool) it can be a good idea to bypass the opposition press completely, at least for periods of the game.

Lloris hasn't got the slickest technique, and he does mishit it at times, but reading in here it seems like he's lofting every goal kick into the stand or putting teammates under pressure. We should be able to have a more nuanced debate.

Gazzaniga has had a tendency to hoof the ball long under very little pressure, and even if he does it pretty well, hoofing the ball long in an assured manner is not what Poch wants his keepers to do. He's not been playing much though, so he'd probably improve just by getting more accustomed to playing actual matches.

Anybody that knows anything about Poch knew that there was no way that Hugo would be dropped for tomorrow. Now lets suck it up and get behind him and everyone else tomorrow. Hopefully a few of them will feel like they owe us and put in a monster performance and get us a convincing win.

When we got Hugo from Lyon, that was a major coup.
He was an incredible shot stopper who eventually became a world class keeper. Few, if any, could pull of the saves he has even if the number of them have been fewer of late. He's been loyal to us as he could have left during the AVB/Sherwood era (though he probably would have if either of those had continued here). Fortunately, we got Poch.

But this "loyalty" may be at the crux of the matter. Although, I place it at Poch's door.
Poch is a terrific man manager. He nurtures players who are willing to buy into his philosophy.
And we've all seen the positive results of him continually placing his confidence in players despite their struggles. But I believe Poch has been loyal, not only to Hugo but to others as well, almost to a fault.

There are numerous prominent & successful managers that would be ruthless enough to drop Lloris after that single mishap. Yet Poch is wise enough to understand that doing so creates further issues with a player's psyche. The fear of being immediately dropped after making a mistake destabilizes a player. Instead of playing fearlessly & expressing his ability, his hope is to not make a mistake. In this regard, he stops playing to the best of his ability. It's unhealthy for the player & consequently for the team.

Poch's system is to retain possession & to play out from the back. If we have the ball, it's harder for the other team to score. Simple.

Some of those stats someone previously posted of Hugo seem impressive but I find very deceiving.
It appears quite evident to many that playing with the ball at his feet isn't the strongest aspect of Hugo's game. He looks uneasy on the ball & his distribution, even without pressure, isn't that great. And when pressured, he's put his teammates in some difficulty on numerous occasions. This doesn't instill much confidence in the rest of the team. You can see it when they have the ball & consider passing it back to him. It's definitely not their first choice from both a tactical & confidence perspective.

Furthermore, Hugo is our captain. He should be a strong character that if he doesn't lead with his word, should at the very least do so by example. And that means to perform at his best at all times & have the backing of his teammates. I feel it's lacking.

IMHO, Hugo has given Poch some opportunities to drop him in the past. There have been a series of costly blunders on & off the field. It wouldn't have been hard for him to say: "Hugo, listen. You're a fantastic keeper but it may be a good time to take a break, breathe, & watch a game from the sidelines. Hopefully this takes the pressure off for a bit."

But Poch knows far better than I what is going on inside that dressing room & within each player's mind.

I can't see Poch dropping him for the Palace game & nor should he. It would be quite demoralizing for Hugo not to lead the team out onto the this new stage. The repercussions could be far greater.

But if there is another blunder I'm almost certain Poch will have him sit. Gazza is competent deputy & is confident on the ball. Those in front of him play differently when he's in net & that bodes well for the team. That uncertainty associated with a pass back is minimized.

I agree with many others that there are more pressing issues that need to be addressed before the keeper. But i can't help believing that the trade off of getting a keeper who is a lesser shot stopper than Hugo but a better ball handler would greatly enhance Poch's system & the team's performance.

My bag of onions.

Gazzaniga is nowhere near Lloris' level. It’s a shame but it’s true.

it's a small sample size but his performances so far in a spurs shirt haven't shown that to be the case. whether he could replicate that level as 1st choice i don't know but i imagine that had he come with a higher reputation/price tag then more would be open to the possibility.

Lloris just doesn't look as confident these days. I'm not sure if it's a cause or consequence of the mistakes. Maybe we should try bringing in an additional goalkeeping coach, or helping him with the psychological aspects of the game before writing off a player who should be coming into his peak now.

No matter what, everyone lucky enough to be at that stadium tomorrow night MUST get behind Lloris & make him feel some love.

That is what Michael Owen was eluding to the other week when he got slammed on here for saying supporters can make a difference.

We've been having to suck that much up lately we may as well name the ground the Dyson Stadium if we lose tomorrow.
Desperately need a convincing win to get us sorted. God bless Wolves tonight.

It happens, doesn’t mean we should replace him.

Toughest position on the pitch being a goalkeeper, outfield players have the luxury of mid placing a pass, or not controlling the ball properly. Goalkeepers don’t.
Yes he should have done better, but it happens to all goalkeepers.
:cautious: This sounds like a goalkeeper's dad talking:ROFLMAO:

Are you defending Hugo here? On what grounds? Because stats says he saves the most shots? Sorry but I watch the games and he is an absolute calamity. Can't kick, shits himself at all times, pulls off saves you'd expect a goalkeeper to make its been a long time that Hugo has been living on his reputation.

I don't care about stats that says he saves the most and all of that twaddle. I see for my eyes he isn't the same goalkeeper and I see a good save from an average save and trust the judgement of my eyes rather than some stat rolled out by a robot.

Our goal today came because of Kane being proactive with a free kick. Will he get an assist for that goal no? Did he make it? As much as anyone else did. Stats don't tell you what the eyes can't if you watch how things unfold.

Players in our squad that have to improve or they won't have a future with us are Lloris, Trippier, Aurier, Sanchez, Foyth, Rose, Wanyama, Lamela & Lucas. Lucas played well today, I expect that level from him always. Hugo isn't the same player we used to have, he let's the team down too often and if it was any other profession he'd be getting a ticking off because of it. Pochettino simply has to, by hook or by crook get us top 4 now and if that means passing off Hugo and dropping him that's what he has to do.

Poch has focused so much of his attention on a happy camp. This isn't playschool it's the Premier League. Do your job properly or pack your bags and play in Ligue 1 for your remaining days as a professional. That was a crucial point today and Hugo let us down. He deserves to get slated, because of the one mistake but the countless mistakes and wobbles I've seen for near on 3 years now. He's not being the professional he should be so he's under the radar and rightly so. This isn't a tin pot club it's Tottenham Hotspur. If we want to be a big club we put the club first, not the feelings of the players or the camaraderie in the dressing room when the lads play uno.

Enough is enough, realistically we should be looking at a Spurs team who should have lost 5 games in a row if it wasn't for Arsenal missing in the last minute. A shambles, the childish way we've behaved over the past 6 weeks needs to stop, it's appalling and the players should feel ashamed of how they're letting the team that pay their wages down at the moment.

Hugo is hanging by a thread as so many others should be at present as well

You people use stats when its convenient for you. When the stats goes against your argument, you say stats are pile of shit.

I give up

Gotta admit, I do bob myself every time a pass is heading towards Hugo.

I always fully expect the ball to bobble over his foot as he goes to kick it, and it ends up in the front of the net.

With Trippier probably making the pass... lol
