Not sure I agree.
Given that there are finite funds, and if the choice came down to Madison or Scott.
Most would choose Madison because he is a bigger name (shiny new toy).
Scott may well have the higher ceiling and in a year or two there are many fans who will say we should have signed him when we had the chance. This is merely an example, but how many fans would truly choose Scott over Madison at this point?
I don't think many truly want the project player. There may be some among the fan base who have a certain affinity for seeing youngsters come good, not sure that is the 'fifa generation' though.
No you’ve misunderstood my point. I’m saying that there has always been a place in squad for a younger, talented player. And there are always minutes available for them to develop.

That doesn’t mean that we’d choose between signing them or a readymade player instead. You can have both.
for example, any of Grealish, Maddison (at Norwich), or even Eze would have had rotational minutes with Eriksen a few years ago. We passed on all of them (maybe they passed on us.)

And I don’t think fans would not be onboard with that approach.

I’d be more than happy with Scott and direct the funds to the CBs. He could have the kind of impact Dele had when he came and at half the price of Maddison.

Wouldn’t say they are similar players, but if the reports of Newcastle’s £75m spending limit are true then this would be a significant dent into their chances of signing Maddison.

Sidenote: Barella for £50m would be signing of the summer

A real statement signing and hopefully he’s their alternative….. I want a shiny new Barella too!

No chance. It's an easy story to link Newcastle to anyone. Lazy journalism. I really think they just pick names out of a hat and go with it.
They'll never get Barella for 50m, and he'd never want to go to Newcastle

Not disagreeing about him potentially not wanting to go there, but Mike McGrath is one of the best around, I definitely don't think this is just lazy journalism. They probably are trying to sign him.

John Cross on TalkSport saying that Newcastle struggling to get this done as they won't meet his salary. He's claiming we're prepared to pay him more believe it or not.
Yes, mentioned previously that I was reasonably confident this deal could be done and haven't heard anything to change that. We are still his preference and a deal is more than doable.

They want 60m for their keeper, but 50m for their crown jewel. Doesn't compute.
Don't know if Mike is good or not, but I smell bullshit. Tomorrow it'll be "Newcastle closing in on Mbappe for 30m"

Barella is a joke of a signing for Newcastle. Cant believe they'd be allowed a free run at him for £50m
Well they aren't, the article doesn't say they are "closing in" and considering they described him as a 6 they have no idea who Barella is lol

Anecdotal but usually players who shine at lower premier league clubs shine brighter when they step up to a better team I feel. Oddly the opposite seems to be true for players who come from foreign leagues.

Listening to Ben Jacobs on Last Word on Spurs and he mentioned Maddison is having twins soon (which is a reason why the transfer may not be done until after the birth)

He mentioned Maddison wants CL football but he and his partner have always wanted to live in London and with the birth of the twins may sway JM to choose us over CL football

NO chance barella is going for 50m. He is their poster boy.

I was about to post something similar.
My priorities this window are GK and CB, without doubt and because we will no doubt have limited funds again, these positions have to be where we spend the money first.
If that means we take a gamble on Scott rather than paying loads for Maddison, I could live with that.

If we could get say, Scott and even Hatate too for less than Maddison, as long as we get a decent goalie and CB, I would be ok.

We're not going to fix every issue in one window and the defence is definitely our most pressing weakness.

Chelsea have rejected a bid of £30m for Mason Mount per Sky. He's in a similar position to Maddison having only a year left on contract. Maddison had a more productive season in terms of goals whereas Mount was fairly poor but Mount is a more regular England International.

Similar apart from being employed by a club that just got relegated. Don’t think they are letting anybody get him cheap.

I don't think anyone should put any weight in that given Southgate's use of attacking players.
