I'ts just the way it is.

You're not going to put all that effort into agreeing a fee and working out a deal to then find out you can't agree on personal terms.

Get the green light on those and then push forward with a serious bid.
I agree, it clearly happens all the time. But then how do they define “tapping up”? Seems like a grey area

Would clearly be a solid signing. Basically our Eriksen replacement - three years later. Though, if Trix says it looks like the Raya situation all over again, it's hard to get too excited. As I interpret that to mean it ain't gonna happen any time soon at their asking price and we will move on. That's too bad, if that scenario plays out.

I hope that there's still a small possibility, as he would be an ideal signing.

I think it's that the club contact and discuss with the player's representatives rather than the player themselves. It's all "hypothetical" chat until an actual bid goes in.

Tapping up is when the selling club doesn't want to be the selling club - see Ashley Cole with Arsenal and Chelsea, or Virgil Van Dijk with Southampton and Liverpool.

Ticks a lot of boxes this one and we’ll be able to score some free kicks and more set pieces…. And that is precisely why it won’t happen.

Can he press though? Is he not injury prone? Is he as professional as he should be off the pitch? I get that in an attacking sense he’s a very good player but does he fit the bill for what Ange requires from his midfielders? I’m not too sure he does to be honest. Given that we don’t have limitless funds is this the best use of £50m for us this summer? Feels like a Levy led transfer to me where he sees a player who’s gettable for a below market price due to Leicester being relegated. I hope I’m wrong but just not sure about this signing.

I get your sentiment. I honestly have no clue about his pressing ability but his injury history is blown way out of proportion.
He’s a young guy who has knuckled down the last two years since he had a daughter and has become a model professional.
I think he could be taught to press, plus surely for players like him son etc we can have a cohesive plan to have them press for 60 odd minutes the bring on fresh legs to carry on the press, maddison and Gio could rotate, son and Richie etc.

He’s made over 30 league appearances in every season since 2017/18.

He must be a cripple :banghead:

This is going to be one of those annoying “almost signings”

We will genuinely try and it won’t happen and we will all regret it for the next 2 or 3 years

If the new manager wants him, let's let him worry about if he can press lol.
To be fair to Maddison he's never played for a team that required intensive pressing.

Coventry, Norwich, Leicester and England.

I think he said that two weeks ago so you can read that as anytime soon will be sooner now.
Not aimed at you at all SpursSince1980 but I am struggling with a lot of the real defeatest negativity by some posters in this thread.
He wants to come to us, we want him, there's apparently no queue of other suiters and Leicester are selling him. That's not a bad scenario in my book.
Oh and he's consistently outperformed anyone in our club bar one over the last three seasons.

He said it on Friday, so 3 days ago.
Of course things may of changed since then, I certainly hope so.

It’s not defeatist at all to repeat what a trusted ITK has said.

My bad. I thought he said something along those lines yesterday, or maybe it was someone else. Or, I dreamt it!!

(And generally speaking, I try not to be too defeatist - but holy moly, if there was ever a season that would make you feel defeated, it was the last one).

I am the only person not really all that excited about potentially signing Maddison?

I mean if we did sign him I would want him to do really well but at the moment I don't really feel strongly one way or the other.
No there are 12 of you, apparently :)

I thought it was longer than that but I guess time moves so quickly.
As I said, the rest of my post wasn't aimed at that point or poster and I stand by the rest of my post.

Most Leicester fans are bitter about such a move to Spurs for Maddison - understandably...

I did see that common issue they have with Madisson is not turning up in big moments & games. While I agree we need a player who turns up at big times...often not turning up is down to not having better players around.

For 3 yrs + he has been their best player. So its not easy if you are the only one doing it. If we sign him, hopefully having likes of Kane Son Bentancur could drive him further.

I believe we should give him a free role , as long as he does basic defending right....Often he loses steam by 70minutes. If so, I dont mind keeping Ndombele with us for the season....Madisson for 70min & Ndombele 20min should give us same output.
