Player Watch Player Watch: Rodrigo Bentancur

On the ball that opinion is actually not far off. Capable of short bursts forward with the ball and both quite athletic. Bentancur is also an underrated passer. But off the ball Bentancur is much more physically imposing and is levels above as a ball winner and game reader.

What the Chelsea games showed for me is the lack of mobility of our midfielders and the inability to deal with any sort of press. I think on both of these measures Bentancur represents a step up.

FWIW Tim Vickery spoke about Bentacur on Talksport tonight.

Said he was puzzled by the signing because 'he can't do anything that Harry Winks can't do'.

But then again we all know Vickery isn't a great judge of a player... thought I'd share.

I love the Legendinho, but he can’t spot a player for toffee. He thought Anderson would be one of the best players on the planet, Nicholas Lodeiro would tear it up in Europe and that Henrique Ganso would be better than Riquelme

Someone pointed it out that these stats are pointless. Very different sides the players are in and Amrabat has barely played at all.

I find it helps to watch a player and judge him/her on their footballing ability. Old fashioned idea, I know.

The most important attribute for a player is to understand instructions and execute them.

Especially so in a Conte team, where he micro manages every aspect of the game plan.

On the face of it this transfer is a bit middle of the road, but Conte has probably sanctioned it as he knows Bentancur will competently follow orders, week in and week out.

Winks might not be able to do that.

I am sure Winks does, and thus Conte said he trusts him. Problem is, Winks is most effective anchoring the midfield but cannot tackle or win headers. Bentancur is 6’2 and tackles and intercepts like Sandro used to. Big upgrade.

I am sure Winks does, and thus Conte said he trusts him. Problem is, Winks is most effective anchoring the midfield but cannot tackle or win headers. Bentancur is 6’2 and tackles and intercepts like Sandro used to. Big upgrade.

That height will hopefully help us defend set pieces better too.

From what I have read he is a top tier player off the ball and is class at winning the ball and generally being incredibly busy. Sounds good to me. Hopefully he is not bad on the ball also.

We're not necessarily looking for someone to do what Winks can't just what he can as well as or perhaps better.
