Epitomised the 2nd half and ran himself into the ground.
Good to see that he can affect a game higher up the pitch too; we’re so used to him as a deep lying playmaker but he drove forward and helped the attackers really well last night. Gives us another option, almost playing as a 10.
Hope he went off fatigued rather than injured.

As I said in another thread, adding Bissouma (or Skipp) frees Bentancur and Hojbjerg to get further up the pitch. I'd like to see Bissouma in that role too but Conte seems to want him at 6. 3 in CM isn't necessarily a defensive setup.

It isnt, but as we saw against Bournemouth it has to be the right 3. It only works with Hojberg and Benta playing, then one of skipp or biss.
If we sign say a Maddison then it'll give us further options and he can cover for Kulu and rotate with him and change from a 3 4 3 to a 3 5 3 if needed.

Getting Kulu back will be a huge boost, but the potential downside is we revert fully back to 343. Bentancur and Hojbjerg are terrific players, but in that setup, in my opinion, they were severely overworked and much less effective. We were constantly outdone in midfield, losing 2nd balls and 50/50s all over the place, and there were fewer options when passing out from the back too which ramped up the pressure. Although we were getting results, the general consensus was that we were also playing badly. Will be interesting to see what Conte does, although I'm pretty sure I know the answer.

why are we Spurs fans so easily pleased.. he is not a great player and certainly not near the level we have had in recent times like Modric, Dembele and Wanyama.. He is weak on the ball, loses possession and rarely makes an important forward pass..sure he looks silky sometimes but where is the end product? just a frustrating player.. Hojbjerg is the better player.. Bentancur for me lacks vision needs to improve quite a bit !!
You don't deserve to even be allowed to type his name, let alone speak it.

Honestly I'd make him captain. Amazing.

Haven't heard anything about his hammy so hoping he was just cramping

He was holding his hamstrings and was subbed. I shudder the thought of our midfield without him against Liverpool.

Our most important player by a mile
He was. However, after he was holding his hammies, we had a break, and he sprinted from in our half, past about four other players to their penalty area (where unfortunately he didn't receive a pass)

To do that at any time of the game let alone the last minutes (Just before being subbed) says to me he'll be fine and him going off was just precautionary.

also sprinted the length of the pitch to celebrate our winner with the team from the bench

His better than Carrick but similar type of player
Carrick never worked like Bentancur but then pressing wasn't as present back then. I remember that mazey run Carrick did at Highbury which would have been a great goal. Bentancur showed similar footwork before Hojbjerg hit the bar. He just has that South American work rate and tenacity which puts him on another level.

Not sure what his best position is actually - whether he's better deeper, or further forward, or neither/in between

Either way, he's awesome

Loving Bentancur but not sure he has reached Carrick levels yet. He was a hugely underrated player, absolute class.

I love him and think he oozes both class and work rate. and am also a huge fan of positivity.

However, I do wish we wouldn't be so reactionary. Let's acknowledge he is in good form and hope that form continues. Lets not run the risk of proclaiming him to be the new Messiah, and then moan when he doesn't quite keep this up over the mid term (EG Romero)

Wish we had two of him in CM. Has everything you need in that position.
As others have pointed out, the crazy thing is that his other team Uruguay do have someone quite similar to him in valverde. Imagine if they could unearth some Uruguayan version of kante and coming up against that midfield 3… ?

They do have Ugarte who has some potential himself and played well against us for Sporting.

From the latest Conte press conference:
Rodrigo Bentancur came to you as a three-time Serie A title winner but he's reached a new level under you. What have you worked with him on and how good can he become?

"Rodrigo has only one problem in my opinion. He has the real possibility to be really, really top, top, but you know that to become a top player you need to will it and to decide this.

In the last period I think that Rodrigo has been playing in an outstanding way, and he's a player that is giving us a lot on the pitch, outside the pitch, and we are talking about a player that is showing the possibility to be one of the top, top midfielders, one of the best midfielders in the world.

But you know to be a good player and then the top that is the difficulty. When you are medium to become good is not so difficult. The difference is to be good to top.

I think he has everything and has the great potential to be a top, top midfielder. For this reason I push him. I push him every day, during the training sessions because he has this quality to become."

What a player we have on our hands. ‪The composure & guile of The Berbinator, and the grit and gore of Edgar Davids.
