Bit disappointing that the Sessegnon deal is still only a 'hopeful' as I kind of expected that it would be all but done but in fairness it could presumably be wrapped up quickly enough once (hopefully) agreed.

IMO Fulham used Sessegnon further forward because that's where they lacked quality. No reason at all to think he can't do a good job at LB. He might even prefer it there for all we know.

They played him further forward because thats where his strengths are....he has a lot to learn defensively to be a LB in the premier league...I think a lot of his flaws are being glossed over because he is a baller....thats not to say Poch wont turn him into a quality LB....first he would need to learn how to tackle and would need to be a lot more robust....

People have short memories. I remember how people spoke of Rose back in 2014 post Sherwood, and him getting boo-ed off at West Brom.

Can't defend, bad positioning, error prone, yada yada yada.

EVERYONE wanted Danny gone and upgraded that summer, including me.

Poch saw what he had to work with and immediately gave him a new 5 year contract. Fans we furious, and both Rose and Poch got hammered for it.

Go read some of the reactions to the club announcement on twitter, it's still up there. Embarrassing to read in parts.

If Poch believes Sessegnon can play LB, and Foyth RB, that's good enough for me.

We may have reservations, some have been well articulated, but Poch is our most successful manager in 50 years.

I find it unfathomable how fans STILL don't trust him to judge a player.

That's not to say he can't make mistakes, but as history has proven over and over, he's far more likely to be right than any of us.

That’s a great point mate. I was one of Rose’s harshest critics that season, and I was hoping he’d leave with Ricardo Rodriguez coming our way.

Since then he’s became our best left back for as long as I’ve been a fan, and I am now gutted to see the back of him.

If Poch could do that with Rose who you could argue was a fairly late bloomer and didn’t have much experience at LB, imagine what he could do with a 19 year old with a fair bit of experience at his age who’s impressed throughout his short career

He's got less to learn on the defensive side of his game than Rose (for example) has to learn on the attacking side of his. Final ball, finding a man, timing runs, shooting - i'd say those things are harder to learn (otherwise N'Jie and N'Koudou would have improved) than positional awareness, which is a crucial part of being a FB imo. Not getting yourself flat footed and square on can't be as hard to learn as whipping in a decent cross.

I mean, thinking about it, how many strong tackles does a full back for a top club actually make on average ? You are attacking far more than defending, you'd tend to usher opponents down the line and then block the cross or see them inside (if that's their weaker foot) and let the centre back come over to deal with them. You'd need pace as you'll inevitably get caught upfield on occasions. Sure you obviously can't be weak and easily brushed off but Trippier is hardly the Hulk and neither are the Liverpool lads. I'd fancy my nan in an arm wrestle with Bellerin and Alonso wouldn't strike fear into your heart if you met him in a dark alley (unless he was drunk and in a car).

I have to say I’d much rather he played left back long term. I’m personally not a fan of traditional wingers in most systems and would much rather one who can drift inside on their favoured foot.

I disagree. Whipping in a cross into the "Corridor of uncertainty" should be a basic skill that any professional footballer can do from out wide. Reading the game, knowing where runners are going and positioning yourself to either intercept or make a challenge is far harder.

It's always next week, we are the bloke who always says he's going to start a diet on Monday and Monday never comes
I´ve been on a diet that starts on Monday for the last 15 years. Worked wonderfully - haven´t lost a pound.

The PL season starts in less than a month’s time.

Sess is currently recovering from injury and if we do sign him during this TW, I hope he recovers in time for the start of the season.

Rose & Toby may leave during this window.

Davies is currently recovering from his op and hopefully he’s match fit for our first game. Likewise Dier & Aurier (if he stays).

Trippier is gone and Foyth is banned for our first two games.

If we don’t sign any defenders during this TW, and Rose & Toby leave, I wonder which defenders would start / be on the bench, against Villa as we’re running very thin in our defence.

That said, I’m optimistic that there would be a silver lining somewhere for us when the season starts. ?

Son is suspended for the first two games too.

Even if we get all our signings in etc I think that this season is going to be 1 of transition.

Well at least I learnt something in this thread... Both Son and Foyth serves 2 match suspension.

Davies and Dier, we knew were recovering and injured.

Sess is still recovering from injury as well. I believe he will be the next signing.

So kwp at LB - Aurier at RB and two central defenders for 1st 2 games then.

Might even see Jan at LB and KWP or Aurier at RB

I wouldn’t bank on aurier being back in time. 21 day rest time from when he last played for Ivory Coast. If he is I doubt he’s going to be ready to start against villa

I'm over with transition. Sorry but we need to win something now. I hope the club don't feel the same
Transition shouldn’t mean we can’t win anything. Chelsea are in perpetual transition and still pick up trophies along the way.
