Still early and hopefully just the way Brentford play but he needs more room to play in and needs to be more central.

Let's hope he finds his feet in the system

He's lost a yard of pace and I'm worried he'll struggle to make space for himself. He's not really the kind of winger that takes on defenders 1vs1. He's always been a counter attack player first and foremost. He needs space in front of him to make any sort of impact.

Not all teams play as defensive as Brentford though so we'll see.. I feel like someone like Solomon is a much better natural fit in Anges system.

I’m worried about Ange’s use of him. He’s never an orthodox winger. Should really be moved up front with Richarlison being used primarily as a substitute IMO.
He will start every game this season if fit, he is Captain now, but might work if he plays on the right instead, and he must dare to run down the sides more,

i agree, Son isnt a natural winger, he has always been more of an inside forward. he isnt one for beating defenders on on one, or crossing in from the touchline. but 1 game in, we shall see what happens,

It’s not about courage, he simply lacks the attributes to play as a traditional winger. His take-on success rate has always been poor and he’s now lost a yard of pace.

He’s being misused, either Ange needs to adapt the role in the setup or he needs to move Son up front.

I think we will probably stick with this front three as is for a few games but if things don’t improve then he will have to change something. Agree with you tho. I sort of feel the same about Kulu as well tbh (aside from him not being able to play CF. Maybe AM)

Last time Sonny played this pure winger role, he was 24 or 25. At that age he was quicker and had a sense of adventure.

Now, this Sonny doesnt have the same turn of foot compare to his younger self. And as a player he has matured as a player who had a completely different role for 5 years

Sonny needs to move to center or we need a better no9 who will work well with him.

He also needs to start crossing more - for some reason he was afraid to cross.

I think there's still a bit of that aversion to risk that the players had drummed into them for so 3 or 4 years. You could see it every time he got 1v1 with the full back. He had a little look to go to the line, thought better of it and came back inside. It's understandable that he doesn't have the explosive pace of his younger self, but in order to create space for that shot he likes when he comes back inside on his right he needs to at least make the defender wonder whether this might be the time he goes outside.

To do that he needs to feel happy that losing out isn't going to give the manager a coronory.

In general though, I think he needs to develop another string to his bow as he moves further into his 30's.

Yeah he was poor last season. He doesn’t suit this system at all
A completely different system? I mean literally take a breath. I don’t think it’s right to be overly critical of anyone yet. Especially the attack.

Normally I’d be with you in giving it time but when you have a system that requires both wingers to be great 1v1 as their bread and butter it’s clearly a problem when you have two wingers that just aren’t. Son never has been, not even when he was young and had a better burst of pace, that’s not going to change into his 30’s. I’m not writing him off as a player, I just don’t think he’s suited to the needs of a winger in that role at all and we’re wasting our time keeping him out there. Kulusevski is at least okay 1v1 because he has good feet but he wants to cut inside mostly which again isn’t what we need. We need to be spending that Kane money on at least one winger that actually suits the system because we currently only have 1 in Solomon. If need be sign 2 wingers, use Son and Richy as strikers and Kulusevski as an 8/10, at least you’d be playing to their actual strengths then. It really isn’t too early to say they aren’t going to cut it out wide in this system, it’s been obvious all pre-season and it was obvious all game long today

Yeah I agree. We should make a traditional winger that hugs the line and can beat his mean a priority.

My problem so far is that both Son are Kulusevski are hugging the line. They stay out there, gets the ball out wide, far away from dangerous areas. I think we have to move Son to Richys position and play someone else to the left, that actually fits Anges system.

I'd say without looking at stats that it appeared that Emerson and Skip got into more advanced positions the Son and Kulu today... Sonny is so wasted like playing left midfield, he's too far away from goal. He needs to be be buzzing around the box getting on the ball there...
