I don’t think people appreciate how much pressure he is under to play for the national team. It’s not something he can ever turn away from - no matter how he feels.

Pressure from where? Not the fans, most of whom didn't want him involved in these friendlies. There was even a sign in the stadium at the Tunisia game that read "Son's health comes first"

I think some people don't really get what Sonny is to South Korea, much as we love him he is a national hero, a national icon, it beyond anything we can really fathom, it seems to me its like he's the nation's captain not just the football team. It's quite extraordinary. He is the quintessential role model.

Anyone find his goal scoring record (38 in 114) for south Korea a bit underwhelming? You'd think considering he's the only true star forward in that region playing both friendlies and competitive matches for one of the top nations often against poor opposition he'd be filling his boots with 50, 60 goals at this point.

The all time record for them is 58 so still some ways to go

Agree but thats why its on the club to make the decision for him. Both Son and his country can have zero complaints with Spurs, he's played in every tournament over the years. A couple of pointless friendlies that have no bearing shouldn't derail our season or their asian cup campaign.

He is the Beckham of South Korea.

We've let him go to all sorts of tournaments and matches so now he's in need of carefully being managed it is good to see that is happening.

He’s much bigger , Beckham wasn’t in the same league culturally to the UK what Son is to South East Asia. He’s Pele , Michael Jordan level.

Ok. I seem to remember at the 2002 WC the Asians going pretty berserk about Beckham and Beckham was a galactic for Real Madrid and an international model dating a spice girl so I’d argue Beckham was a bigger global brand than Son is.

A club isn't in the position to make that decision. It's a game that doesn't involve the club.

Beckham is an idol.
Son is their own. He is more than a brand to them. It's more than money and fanfare.
