Toby is 29yo and has maybe around 4 good years left in him at best – If we get in De Ligt we potentially have a CB for the next 14. I don't want to sell to a rival but if we risk only getting 25mil for Toby next year and miss out on De Ligt because of it, that would be bad business.

This is also a reality check for people that thinks we are on a par with the elite clubs. We simply cannot say no to a bid like that (?) – 70mil for a 29yo defender is unreal.

Won't happen now without a ridiculous offer - Herc confirmed ajax would want a loan-back for 1-2 seasons.

selling him to Man U just makes us look bad whatever the price and doubly so if we don’t get martial.

I think it depends - if we aren't keeping him, €80m could end up strengthening us a lot.

It's not like Utd are Liverpool and need defenders to improve - they're defensive enough as it is imo, so I don't see him strengthening them as much as them funding a big signing would for us.

For me being brave means swallowing a bit of pride and saying to Toby: “We want to win the league, and we’re not going to sell you to a rival. You are one of the best defenders in the world, in your peak years, and here is a new contract that recognises that. Forget about playing in the EPL for someone else, and we’d want £75m to sell you abroad. If you don’t go and you don’t sign then you can leave next year for £25m after a year in the reserves on £50k per week.” And then offer him more than the scousers pay Van Dijk.

You can't make a player sit in the reserves for a year for no reason. The players union would be all over it I'd imagine.

In the mean time we lose £50M...... and keep a player who hasn't caused any fuss or spoken to the media in the reserves stinking up the whole vibe of the dressing room? Not to mention putting off any potential signings from joining us. we aren't an elite side "YET" we depend on the chance we give to youngsters over established teams, Dele, Sanchez id say chose us due to the chance we give younger players.

Surely if it comes to him spending a year in the reserves then you might aswell sell him

If you hold his player registration you can. Which we do for another year.

Why treat him like shit? He hasn't done anything wrong, we'd just have a depreciating asset rotting and do ourselves out of money. You can't just punish a player for no reason.

I’d still try it. He might sign. Poch picked him at the end of the season purely so he could go to the WC, so the relationship between Poch and Toby is probably good or at worst salvageable. The problem appears to be between Levy and Toby’s dad. But I argue that Toby is the best CB in the EPL (or maybe second to Jan), and we’d do better next year with him already acclimatised rather than spending £55m on the still developing DeLigt, and use the money on a top drawer CM rather than gambling on Grealish.

Why sell the best CB in the league to Man U? I’d rather have a potentially unhappy player. We can still sell him if he doesn’t sign, but being brave means trying. Let’s let Man U wait until the last minute for a key player or insist they sell us Martial. Selling Walker to Man C after they refused to sell a player to us was weak not brave.

I would absolutely love Toby to stay but if poch doesn’t want him and he doesn’t want to stay then it’s pointless sitting him in reserves ( there’s not actually a reserves anymore ).

Can't help but now think that if they get toby and we dont get martial that united have won, similar to City last season.

Would this potentially mean that De Ligt is back on considering the huge fee we are receiving. Getting Toby out the door without a top class replacement seems a bit of gamble.
