If, somehow, Toby doesn’t leave by Thursday, does anybody seriously think the club and Toby won’t come to some mutually beneficial arrangements? He’s a world class centre back, and one of the highest output employees in our multi million pound organisation. He also isn’t getting any younger, any less injured or any more appealing, he’s at his peak. 100% if we don’t sell him we will find a compromise with him whereby we derive some use from him, and him from us, for the next 12 months until that clause is triggered.

Loan swap with Ajax for De Ligt, with an option for us to buy the player at the end of the season. Everyone's a winner.

No idea where I plucked that 'never gonna happen' scenario from but I like it....

They'll be pro Manchester mate. And be fair the article is bloody awful.

In the same way that the Evening Standard is "pro-London"? What nonsense.

As someone who lives in Manchester, has worked with Manchester United, and has mates at the MEN, United and City, I have a reasonable understanding of the local politics and allegiances, and I can assure you that the MEN is essentially Guardiola's propaganda rag.

Why would they take sides for Spurs and against United potentially angering and alienating a good proportion of their readers?

I agree.

Yet, even assuming they are not 'pro-Utd' - it is still a shockingly poor piece.

That may be true but it's abundantly clear from his twitter page that Luckhurst is a Utd fan.

He also posted this nugget a couple of days ago. Admits Utd had little interest in other links and yet it's us that have had our bluff called, and the price is potentially higher than what they offered in May, perfect logic.

Wrote in February #mufc wanted Alderweireld and they tried to do an early deal for £55m in May. They’ve been linked with so many centre halves since but ‘interest’ in majority was non-existent. Was bound to drag out with Levy but Spurs’ woeful window has helped United.

Londons a different beast. Loads of Man U, Liverpool, Celtic, Rangers, Newcastle etc etc. They sell their papers.
If you think MEN is going to support a London Clubs perspective, I think the nonsense will have to be judged by others.

Have a look how many shares an "anti United" story gets on their Facebook as opposed to a "Mourinho has won three trophies in two years at United" one.

Much like many newspapers struggling to survive, they're mostly funded by clickbait gash writing nowadays.

Not commenting on the larger Manchester political paper scene, Samuel Luckhurst the writer of this specific article has at least for this summer been very focused on positive Man United content. What he produces for MEN is pro ManU content.

He has plenty of opinions on us:

"A few changing their tune about Tottenham after the ‘pride in defeat’ guff post-Juve. A club that has two League Cups in the last quarter of a century has not suddenly inherited an elite mentality. Their last coach who won something was Juande Ramos. Upheaval feels inevitable."

"Eric Dier 'desperate' to join Manchester United despite Tottenham refusing to sell star"

No, London is not a different beast. I know most Londoners think Manchester is all terraced houses, greyhounds, blokes with long greasy hair and people with no teeth who can't talk properly, but surprisingly it has moved on slightly in the past 30 years.

Plenty of people here who support neither United or City, a number which is only going to increase now London has started losing more residents to Manchester than vice versa.

Manchester United turn to £50m Jérôme Boateng in search for defender

https://www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/...r-me-boateng-in-search-for-defender-2z0dx6vtl

Manchester United have opened talks with Bayern Munich over the potential signing of Jérôme Boateng, the £50 million-rated Germany centre back.

It is understood that officials from United and Bayern held discussions about the transfer of the 29-year-old prior to last night’s friendly between the two teams in Bavaria, which the hosts won 1-0.

Maybe dude. You live there, I'll have to take your word for that (more moving there). Never thought it was a grey place personally...when I've visited.
I moved from London to Edinburgh 20 yrs ago, now that was grey!
The thing I'm saying is Local newspapers support their community, as they should, if there is a tendency for this paper to lean towards City, that'll probably more be picked up on by locals. They'd still want MU to do well rather than Spurs.

Yup click on his name at the top of the "article" and you get this:

"Samuel joined the Manchester Evening News in 2014 and is the Manchester United editor."

That said, it sounds more like it was written by a 13yo fan than a journalist.

I was born in London and live in London now, but I studied at Manchester Uni for 4 years. It’s a total myth than more local Mancs support City. More support United for sure, and there’s loads of statistics online to back this up.

Anyway, it is terrible article and I don’t want to derail the thread.

I just hope we don’t roll over and sell Toby to United for anything other than the going rate.

Noises getting louder about United and Boateng...

Sky Germany saying United have approached Bayern

http://www.skysports.com/transfer-centre

Paul Hurst - Press Association saying it's because they see a Boateng deal as more feasible, mentions that we want £75m for Toby. Wonder if that Toby bit was part of the press leak? if so I'm still betting on it being a game of chicken with Levy.
