Is it just me or do you find the wages offered to players these days is totally OTT.

Yes I know it's supply and demand.

But carry on like this there will be no demand.

Wages are absurd. There is so much money sloshing around in football but very little of it gets down to the grass roots. There is also a very unhealthy greed culture in the game which seems to be accepted by fans. They readily fork out a large chunk of their disposable income to go and watch and then state that player x is worth 100k per week. As I said, absurd.

Wages are insane, youth players getting over £10k a week is ridiculous imo but seems to be the state of play these days.

No idea if this is true or not but my brother told me that his boss lives on the same road as Onomah somewhere in Ponders End and he said his new contract has him on a salary close to £30k a week!!

Now I didn't think he'd be on anywhere near that much but considering the likes of Chelsea and City were sniffing around maybe there's some truth in it. Came home in a brand new Mercedes a few days after signing apparently.

Supply and demand, would you prefer the money in the game go to the players on the field or to the board members filling meeting rooms and office space?

Like it or not there is a lot of money in the game and the figures are quite low when compared to other 'entertainment' industries.

Nobody complains at
# Katy Perry earning a reported $2.6million (per week)
# Barry Manilow earning a reported $1.8million (per week)

Who is Katy Perry?? Brand's ex??

I'm not paying her wages anyway.

No - I would hope that the money goes to pay good but not exorbitant wages to players.

And helps youngsters coming through too.

For a start they should reduce ticket prices. Look at Germany for example.

But to have an 18 year old on £10,000 a week (say) is crazy in my opinion.

And that is just my opinion.

Peace.

I wonder if at some distant point in the future, that to prevent the game imploding on itself, a cap on earnings is imposed.

At the end of the day, despite people banging the same old drum, the PL is the only decent export Britain has on a large scale these days.

We're milking the middle east and russians through HMRC - so a footballer's tax bill pays for probably a good few soldiers and nurses, I'll bet.

If you don't like it, stop buying it :)

Seriously, stop going to the games, don't buy the merchandise, don't buy Sky or BT Sports and don't drink at pubs with the football on there.

I've always said that the fans have a lot more power than they realise, they just need to organise themselves.

Trouble is, I think a lot of people use football as escapism to paper over cracks in their own lives. So they keep on buying the product, like an addict.

I'm not holier than thou; I've done it in the past myself, but I am beginning to recognise it and I don't get too stressed out these days, when a result goes against us.

Flloyd earned hundreds of millions for 36minutes work, at least these guys have to play for 7 months of the year

Look at the revenue football brings in. The wages are in parity to this imo. Rappers who wear a different pair of trainers every day bother me more. Not footballers who work the majority of the year and do a lot of charity work.

It isn't just you, but no I do not think the wages offered to players is totally OTT.

Footballers are entertainers and premier league footballers (and others in top leagues around the world) are the best at what they do. Football is extremely competitive and they have worked their way to the top and they deserve to be paid handsomely for their skills and the entertainment they bring to millions of people every week. People say it's just kicking a ball about, but if it was easy as that then every one could play to that level (which obviously people can't).

The players on the big big wages, i.e Rooney £250k a week are few and far between. These are the marquee players supposedly at the top of their game. The players that supporters want to come and watch. They are the star entertainers and should be compared to people like Tom Cruise or Tom Hanks, who are earning in excess of £1 million a week but you don't hear people going on about how obscene the salaries of actors are do you.

Supply and demand like you said although you think footballers are on a lot of money, have you seen the amount Basketballers and American footballers earn?

Seems like a lot. I get to see ( or at least hear about ) a lot of players contracts, and I would be amazed if Onomah is on such an amount. It;s easy to get a brand new Mercedes these days, the deals on leasing cars are competitive to say the least. I know people who barely touch 30k a year who drive new mercedes/audis etc it's no longer a sign of wealth in todays ultra materialistic world imo unless we are talking high end top of the range models. A, B and low C, E class mercs can be had for 300 notes a month.

The amounts are obscene but I don't blame the players at all. Good luck to them. Although it can be problematic, earning so much can give people a distorted view of the world etc they can hardly turn round and say 'pay me less, I think thats too much!'

It went up from £850 to £16k a week. Not bad for someone yet to start a premier league game.

As for the original question. Where should the money go? To the owners? Grass routes? Spread more evenly amoungst the leagues?

What hsppens then? Do the top players go to play in other leagues where they can get better money?

No I think you're the first person to ever question high wages in football. Surprised it hasn't been a common point of discussion for the last twenty years.

Football is awash with money - and the suppliers are you and me! Provided we keep paying for Sky and BT Sport, continue to buy replica kits, pay our membership/season ticket prices and worship the ground on which these 'entertainers' walk, they'll continue to earn in a week what most people won't earn in a year.

Compare what the top footballers earn - 100 - 200 or even 300 thousand pounds a week with what the 'captains of industry' earn and who are responsible and/or determine the employment of maybe 10s of thousands of employees.

If the gravy boat passes and you can get a leg up - good on you! Just don't think you're anything other than an exceedingly fortunate journeyman! (Adebayour take note!)
