I don't always like to post articles from the Mail but this is a good one which explains our use of the tactical foul. This is a critical part of Poch's approach to playing football. Press hard up the pitch, attack the opposition defence before they can release the ball properly, force them into playing at a faster tempo and making errors. But the tactical foul is a new successful addition to the arsenal.

Tactical fouls traditionally were a big part of the defenders armory in stopping the striker at all costs. The cynical foul was part and parcel of the game. Pepe of Real Madrid uses this brilliantly. This then became the defensive midfielder's dark art as used by the likes of Xabi Alonso, Thiago Motta, Sergio Busquets or the old masters Gattuso, Makele and Marco van Bommel for example. However under Poch, its now a key tactic in not only winning the ball up high the pitch but protecting our side from counter attacking by the opponent.

The tactical foul is often an outcome of the turnover of the ball. When we lose it we press to win it back but when we don't win it back we aim to stifle the oppositions options in using the ball effectively. Erik Lamela has the second highest number of fouls in the PL and is probably our most aggressive presser.

But he is also the most likely to stop the other side recovering when in possession by using the tactical foul. Harry Kane also carries this out very effectively. Poch has taken Bielsa's philosophy of playing the game in the other teams half to another dimension with the pressing game. But the tactical foul slows the opposition counter attack, allows us to get back our shape and disrupts their movement. Interestingly, most of our tactical fouls occur in the opposition half. Manchester United who lead in fouls (we are second) have these spread all over the field with more in their own half.
