I'd take Gomes' "dodgy on crosses" any day of the week over someone like Robinson, who'll stay on his line. You know what you get with Gomes. He rarely catches crosses, but he very rarely doesn't get them away to safety. The defenders know exactly what he's going to do.

Call it what you want, but Gomes is a great keeper, and that includes his commanding of the area.

Im not being scarcastic this is a genuine question, but are you basing this assement on the two games against us or have you watched him in greater detail over a longer period of time?

Here here, much as it is natural to want to slate players who miss in these circumstances, you have to respect the fact that they had the bottle to step up and do so.

Its a frustrating way to go out, but I for one am proud of the lads and look forward to a strong finish to the season and glorious year next season.

We already have our first trophy for the best part of a decade and have made Uefa cup qualification for 3 years straight (unthinkable only a short while ago).

Now we need to focus on keeping our better players and bringing in the right players to complete our squad and look forward not backwards on tonights misfortune (we did well and were simply unlucky)

well said.

Yeah right.

I particularly liked it when he decided to control a cross with his chest, and the ball rebounded 5 yards in front of him to the amazement of his defence and luckily enough for him Keane.

I thought we were pretty poor tonight, lucky we have a talented player like Berba that can come up with something special. Otherwise couldnt see us scoring. The free kicks and corners were poor, no real service for the attackers.
We took better penalties than I expected, got to give special credit to zokora because I thought he was nailed on to miss.

I think over the two legs PSV deserved to go through although I don't think they will win the cup.

Those 2 games, Dutch highlights (not full matches) and the old ever reliable STATS :)

Granted I've not seen him play a huge deal, but whenever I have, he's impressed me big time.

Alright I'll give you that  That was a pretty whacky moment :)

Next year with Ramos summer signings we'll be in a better position to challenge for the UEFA cup. Having Hutton cup-tied didnt help cause he looks a real prospect.

We made an established Champions League side look ordinary tonight on their own patch. Very happy with the effort the lads put in. PSV had nearly a week to prepare for the game as well and we had half that.

My tuppence worth:

Played well enough to win without the need for penalties. That said to much forward momentum was lost either through poor decision making or players running up blind alleys. Could have created a few more chances. We didn't really look troubled at the back.

Thought Zokora, did really well. Hudd too and Malbranque, although both were guilty of sloppy passing at times. Jenas was non existent again in a big game (sorry but i think it so), Keane spent too much time gesticulating rather than getting on with it. Berbatov did well but a lot of things were not working for him tonight. Don't understand why most of our players kept slipping over though. Lennon injected pace but kept running up blind alleys. Bent.... i feel sorry for but he plays like he is intimidated or scared of being himself. Robbo had a decent game, but he never really got near any of the other penalties (apart from the one he saved).

So near. After the highs of wembley, this is back to earth with a bang. That said PSV are a CL team and they never really beat us. They needed penalties.

So fucked off. Just feels like a typical THFC story at the moment. Hopefully soon our stories will be different.

Gutted. How I hate penalty shoot-outs.

But it's not all bad and Ramos is on the right track. We have one cup after all and a UEFA place next season.

A few new signings and we'll be on the way to more success.

I don't think we played that well at all, the first half was boredom city. Where as Everton were playing at a high tempo giving it their all.

Players like Maradona, Platini, Zico and Van Basten missed penalties in the biggest tournaments. It's stupid to blame Jenas or Chimbo.

Absolutely. I said something similar a few pages ago.

Great strike by Berba. We outplayed PSV and should have won - but the football gods were having none of it.

Still, next season, with the core of this side and four or five new players, we are going to Rock. Big time.

Chris, sorry, but that's cock.

Tonight, and last week, he got away with it. I've watched PSV two or three times this season and hadn't realised how iffy he is on crosses. And, judging by his interchanges with Salcido, his defenders don't know exactly what he's going to do.

Defensively, PSV are outstanding, and that's not just down to Gomes.

i admit my post was made with alot of dissapointment and emotion, a natural initial reaction when u care about something so much. Now ive calmed down and had some reflection, i still have some negative vibes, i.e why didnt attacking players like malbrank or lennon volunteer to take penalties? why was it left to 2 defenders and even zokora who has never scored before?

Like you said...Didnt we win a cup this month? And out play a champions league side? THFC's story looks like a positive one to me.

remember we are only half way through the book

It wasn't to be for us. We are out, but we created enough chances to go through.

I had hoped that we could have risked a little bit more in extra time, because at that time, we had an advantage. One goal, and they had needed to score 2 goals.

In the penalty shootout, you could almost read through the lines that we were the weaker side. Gomes is a top class penalty keeper, and Robinson is not. All credit to Robinson for saving one penalty, but to be fair - it was not a good penalty either. All the other penalties were easy for them, as Robinson already laid down before the shot was gone.

We need a new goalkeeper for sure. When we play matches like this, we really discover that we need a top class goalkeeper as out 1st choice. Robinson did some good saves today, but overall, he is not world class.

I disagree. How can his 'commanding of the area' be great if he struggles on crosses. Its strange because he is a big tall keeper, you would expect him to catch the ball with ease.

I understand what you're saying, but I find a keeper willing to risk a mistake in order to command his area quite refreshing.

He doesn't struggle with crosses. Not in my book anyway. He doesn't catch many, but he gets them safe alright.

Unconventional, but I like.

What can I say, although a game that will only be remembered for the penalty misses from Chimbonda & Jenas, I believe that it was actually one of our best european performances.

PSV are undoubtedly a CL quality side who even knocked out the goons last season on their own turf. When Gomes saved Malbranque's volley there was only going to be one winner and that was reiterated with Jenas' penalty.

Hat off to the boys and especially all the one's that scored a penalty, it takes some bottle.

Well done and lets hope for better luck next season in europe
