Seem to recall he smoked a lot which is worrying because so did I up to 3 years ago

Damn, had no idea he was even sick. True legend of the game, what an impact he had on this sport we all love.

RIP Johan

One of the best players in my lifetime. Lots can now do the tricks he did but he'll always be the first. Very sad.

With the grainy pictures and no 14 shirt, it's like watching Ginola and Modric rolled into one

Gutted. Oozed class when he turned out for Feynoord at the Lane. He was getting on but was a class act. I was standing in the lower shelf side and he did one of his turns right in front of me.

Sad news.

The modern day Barcelona and their players have a lot to thank him for.

A true legend of the game.

I knew he was ill, but still a shock.

From Total Football to La Masia, he was a true revolutionary on the modern game, and stands alongside Pele and Maradona as the greatest footballer ever.

RIP.

he was a very heavy smoker until 1991 , when he was 44 and had open heart surgery

he then started sucking lollipops

BTW Ossie Ardiles smoked more than 40 cigarettes a day while at Tottenham

Before my time as both a player and coach, but I met him about 10/12 years ago as a kid and then going away after that and finding out about him I found his 'way' and ideas fascinating, both the way the game should be played and how a club should be run and it has shaped my outlook on football and how I see things.

Absolutely massive impact on the game. RIP legend.

Very sad, a great influence on football. Love all the stories of him and Hoddle during those UEFA games in the 80's.

Pretty weird I was watching some videos of him juts the other day when Jordi posted something on twitter about his dad for his birthday or fathers day.

It's hard to separate Michels and Cruyff's influence on changing footballing philosophy - Michels definitely shaped the mind of Cruyff (but I guess the young Cruyff also possibly shaped Michels view too) but if you factor in Cruyff's impact as a player as well as a coach he was possibly the most influential football person to have lived IMO. Certainly is for me.

Honour to have seen him play live (on the same pitch as Hoddle) even if it wasn't the Cruyff of his prime.

RIP Johan, this really sucks. I loved listening to him talk about the sport, he made it sound like an intellectual pursuit.

Nobody has influenced modern football more than he is. What a legacy, what a legend. RIP.
