Not sure if this has been discussed already but did anyone hear the recent instalment of this series? It was a pretty interesting episode. Andy Van der Meyde talked about his demise from the game due to off-field activities including drink and drugs, but what was most thought-provoking for me were the stats relating to retired footballers. Apparently...

3 out of 5 pros will be bankrupt within 5yrs of retiring
1 out of 3 will be divorced within 12mths of retiring
3 out of 5 will be divorced within 5yrs of retiring
98% of footballers never play past the age of 25!

I found these stats pretty sobering. As much as we focus on the privilaged few in the premiership, we sometimes forget about the rest who dont always have it so cushy. Even for those in the premiership, poor advice and lack of support can wreak havoc. This is the link to the show for anyone interested http://www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/series/5lspecials . The stats came from the organisation xpro who help retired footballers.

Sobering stuff indeed.

I worked with someone whose son was a pro footballer, but in the lower divisions - he peaked when he played for Sheffield United for a half a season in 2001/2 I think. He was done after that, his contract expired, he couldn't get a new one and was out of the game by his mid-20s with nothing to show for his time but gambling debts and a Vauxhall Tigra.

As you suggest, for a lot of pros, it's not much of a career.

3/5 bankrupt in 5 years? Seems a little high.

You live by your means....then what do you do? Doesn't surprise me atall, 16 year olds getting a couple of grand a week. I'm guessing the clubs will help these kids not go and piss it all up a wall?
