Berbatov's future up in the air as Modric joins Spurs

Last updated at 21:24pm on 26.04.08

Tottenham manager Juande Ramos yesterday welcomed £15.8 million signing Luca Modric — but admitted striker Dimitar Berbatov could be on his way out of White Hart Lane.
Midfielder Modric, 22, has agreed a five-year deal with the Carling Cup winners and watched his new club's 1-1 Premier League draw with Bolton. He will move from Dinamo Zagreb in the summer, as long as he passes the medical and is given international clearance, in a deal including clauses that could make it as much as £20.5m.
The signing of Modric is a coup for Tottenham, who snatched the highly-rated playmaker from under the noses of Newcastle and Manchester City.
Ramos believes Modric is just the player he wants to attract to White Hart Lane.
"There are a few things left, like the medical. When the deal is confirmed, we will be delighted," Ramos said.
"Modric can play anywhere across the midfield and put in a fantastic performance.
"That's the advantage of this type of player. We will use him as we need him.
"The club always try to sign good players. We want to show we are ambitious. We continue to work on building up our squad, but there is no determined timescale to our transfer deals."
Modric believes he is moving to the best league in the world. He said: "It will be a real pleasure to play in the English league. It is the best in Europe, with three English clubs in the semi-finals of the Champions League."
Ramos, however, confessed that Berbatov could be leaving. The Bulgaria striker is desperate to play in the Champions League, and Ramos said: "If a team meet the club's asking price and the chairman wants to do the deal, then possibly he will leave."

Well it does beg the question doesn't it. We keep spending 30m plus every window - just how much do we have before the bank manager refuses one of our cheques?

When it comes down to selling in order to buy then we know what our status in world football is.

I'll be honest and say this could be a good thing in the end.

We were very good in 05/06 because we had a playmaker (Carrick) and two decent strikers (Mido & Keane).

Berbatov essentially became our Carrick & Mido hybrid, there is no reason why Bent & Keane can't fire us forward with the help of our new Carrick/Berbatov - Modric.

Where does it say that Berbatov will be sold - every single player in world football has a price and if that price is met then that player will be sold,no exceptions!

Hi PT - why would the bank manager refuse - we actually make a profit/break even - we're not running up debts to finance ourselves so I don't see how the bank manager comes into it

we have the 11th highest income in world football that's where the money comes from, not the bank but supporters like us - and the odd share issue that frankly is too convoluted for me to understand anyway but doesn't seem like a bank loan to me

as for selling to buy - it depends what you mean- of course we are a trading club and need to get money in on a regular basis as well as spend money - but it's not a case of we have to sell Berbs to buy Modric -IMHo anyway

as for our status in world football - it's pretty high re finance -

of course I'd like it higher and have said so many times we need a 'sugar daddy' chairman to break the top 4 - but our business model is pretty sound I have to say (so far)

If he is not for sale you would not make comments that pretty much invites clubs to make an offer

totaly agree, it just depends on what 'our asking price' is

If he is not for sale you would not make comments that pretty much invites clubs to make an offer

Unless the asking price is totaly over what anyone is willing to pay for him.

Put your money when your mouth is to all the talk that he is off.

Yea but all this talk scream to me that it's just softening the blow for when he does go.

There is no need for the club to comment, big clubs don't comment on the sale of their top players, they dismiss it and dismiss it untill they're blue in the face. This suggests Berba has one foot out already.

Still don't really understand why it's such a 'coup' that we got Modric over the heads of Newcastle and Man City. Only players in it purely for the money would choose either of them over us.

And as for Berba, I'm with Kendall. Too much talk, we should just dismiss it out of hand. There's clearly fire for all this smoke, and both Berba's agent and the club have said as much. Some people are just in denial

you do realise he wouldn't just say something like that out of the blue.

he was probably pressed about the berba issue and eventually someone might have asked: what if a team pays over £35m, say?
to which he replied yes. everyone has a value and if someone meets our ridiculously high valuation of him then we'd be foolish to say no.

I disagree. I would hate to have current troubles of L'Pool with the bickering money grabbing Yanks, or the arrogant Thai at Citeh, with unrealistic expectations, and talk of sacking Sven when they've had their best season for years.

I personally am delighted Roman passed our club for the Chelscum - although Levy insists it was never a possibility anyway - I am happy our club is in the hands of Jewish Lawyers/Accountants/Businessmen from Norf London.

Hi lily :) - I know a lot of spurs fans think like you, so won't in any way argue with your views- but if you ask me would I like Spurs to buy the title - then my answer is yes -

however I also think that the business model we run is sound so you won't see me coming on here having a go at our board - I basically support them -

just I'd rather some very rich Spurs fans got together and said hey we wanna be top 4 - here's £200m a year for 5 years on top of all our other income go get us a title :)
