"Of course I didn't like the result but we still have a second leg and when you lose by one goal it's not too bad," said Juande. "But we have to play much better next time.

"After this it's going to be very difficult and we are going to have to improve our performance in the second leg if we want to go through.

"They played better than us and as a team they are very good - they are first in the Dutch league with lots of points' advantage, and have come from the Champions League.

"We under-performed and I'm disappointed with that. PSV were the better team on the night and we have to accept this result.

"However, I don't think the scoreline is that bad - we just have to play better in the second leg."

I would love to know what he told them to do and see how it compared to what I saw them trying to do. Was the long ball hoofing his idea? If not, why wasn't he screaming at Robbo to stop it?

I think we should be told.

Long ball hoofing?

I made thos post regarding this in the match thread....

If you're getting bogged down in midfield what is wrong with bypassing it, especially when you have a forward who has the beating of the central defenders in the air? Nothing.

We were making no progress through the middle of the pitch and we were also labouring out wide where I though PSV were very strong, so why not play over it to Berbs, it is after all a perfectly legitimate tactic. It isn't easy to play your way through a bank of 4 protected by a bank of 5. If we hadn't have conceded the goal then I am certain we would have remained more patient but the goal dictated the need for some urgency as trailing frm the 1st leg leaves us in a difficult position. I actually think that ramos would have been happy with a 0-0 last night and I would've seen us as favourites at 0-0.

When we went longer we at least got some joy and Berba won a lot in the air but apart from one moment of brilliance at the end of the 1st half Keane might as well have watched the game in his local wine bar.

PSV even with the lead will have to be more adventurous at home and if we get the 1st goal I'm sure we will go through. They looked dangerous in the last 20 minutes last night but the situation was set up perfectly for counter attacking and they done it quite well. If we can ceate the same situation over there then I'm certain we will do it better and nick the goals.

Having slept on it, I think Gilberto was crucial to Ramos' gameplan, and unfortunately a lack of match fitness and practice blew the whole plan out of the water.

We know Ramos loves to attack down the flanks, and against PSV's formation, it was crucial we stretched them wide. For the first time since Bale was injured, Ramos was able to field a genuinely left-footed attacking LB. This enabled Steed to move inside to help JJ & Zoko match up against PSV's CMs.

I believe the plan was to use Lennon/Chimbo and Gilberto (plus occasionally Steed) to stretch them wide. But Gilberto was way off the pace, and then lost a lot of confidence with the Yellow card incident and his disastrous decision to play his way out of trouble for their goal.

So, Juande rightly took Gilberto off, but PSV then tried to exploit O'Hara at LB. And in fairness to young Jamie, he did a decent job out of position. But with Lennon and Chimbo having no luck down the right, and Steed being pretty poor as an attacking threat, we had nothing down our flanks. And ended up with "Robbo as a playmaker".

Ramos' late decision to put Taarabt on for King was typically bold, but nearly cost us.

Still, by all accounts, Ramos is a master at devising gameplans for specific oppositions, and I trust he'll come up with a masterplan for beating PSV in Eindhoven....

Sure, King may have been feeling his knees. But Ramos could have put Dawson on, and kept the same formation.

Putting Taarabt on for a defender was a bold decision.

And Liverpool did beat them 3-0 over there last year after being held to a goalless draw at Anfield.

Daft as it might sound - I don't think that parading the Carling Cup before the match last night helped, like the 125 celebration versus Villa.

The club should concentrate on "doing the business" in hand.

We are going to win in the 2nd leg and progress. Mark my words.

If we can beat Chelsea we can beat any team. We need to execute a game plan well with clear instructions.

Attack downt he flanks
Close down the ball-holder and those around him, force him to hoof the ball up.
Push the backline forward.
Always look for Berbatov/Keane runs. If no options are available hoof it up to Berba.

That would be my instructions.
