Just thinking of all this Berbatov 'ITK' stories floating around & tbh, if Berbatov does leave its nothing compared to how it felt when Glenn left at then end of the 1987 season.

Glenn was a true hero, inspiration, god like figure at the Lane, he was loved & idolised by many. Berbatov doesnt even come close to this. So what if he leaves ?? Robbie Keane will always be loved & already is a Tottenham legend in many peoples eyes, like Hoddle & Gascoigne, but Dimitar is still miles away from this status i think.

A couple of seasons at a club doesnt mean that great a deal does it really ?? With only Jurgen Klinnsman the exception, but we are talking about one of the greatest goalscorers of all time.

But i remember when Glenn said he was leaving, that for me broke my heart. We all loved Glenn, most of us still do. Glenn was special, the heart of Tottenham. We only really got over him because we got Gazza a year or so later.

So if any of you can remember when Glenn left, you probably wont feel anything like you did if Berbatov goes. Dimitars a great asset for the club, a good striker - but not a legend & not a heart.

I'd be more gutted if Robbie Keane left, because he's Tottenham thru & thru, he's a heart - just as much as Ledley King. Good luck to Berbatov if he clears off, at least our hearts wont be broken.

All players are just players, The club goes on regardless and new people become the stars and darlings of the fans.

The only time I was truely gutted to see a player leave was when Klinsmann went to Bayern, but I was young at the time and the players were still my heros.

Now its the team I care about, the players come and go. I would hate Berbatov to go because it is likely that it would make us a weaker team, but nothing to do with status.

We can only hope for an Everton/Rooney effect were we take two steps forward for our step back. The whole becomes stronger for loss of a greater indivdual part.

That could easily happen if the money rasied is used to produce an exceptional midfield outfit, then Bent and Keane (plus any other striker brought in) can focus on scoring.

Hoddle, Waddle, Gazza,

Gutted when Sol left and was absolutely stunned he left for Scum.

Paul Walsh, C Allen, Klinsmann, P Stewart to Liverpool got me, he wasn't making it as a forward, we converted him into a midfielder, he excelled in that position then pool nicked him.

Once they retire I stop caring so much. It's watching our former players at other clubs that gets to me. Wathcing Carrick is the worst. He's such a good player and would be perfect for us. I often go onto Redcafe (utd forum) and reading how highly they all rate him and that he is underated by non utd fans just reminds me of what we used to say about him.

Agreed Destroyer. Hoddle's departure was so hard to take. He was an absolute legend, and for awhile, it felt like supporting Spurs would never be the same again without him.

I was a bit young to remember Hoddle leaving, but Lineker and (especially) Gazza leaving really broke my spirits for a good while.. I was excited to get Anderton soon after, but we all know his story..

Sorry, but no player is bigger than the club.

If they were, the place would have been a supermarket donkeys years ago and the year of 1882 would be just a few lines in a history book.

Players come & players go - in the same way as Managers come & Managers go (ok, so we do have a bit of a track record on that particular one!)

Hoddle was just 'the' player of his time. I remember Mackay or Greaves or Jones as players of 'their' time, too.

We managed to survive all those - we will do it all again, whenever it happens to be.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm sure I remember getting excited when Linker signed only to be deflated again when Waddle left the same summer.

Anybody else remember?

There have been a few in my 30 years

Ginola - Booted out by the Gooner
Klinsmann - 1st time
Sheringham - 1st time
Hoodle
Waddle
Gazza
Gough - Brilliant for one season
Campbell
Ruddock - The season before he left after his tiff with Sugar was impressive.
Venables - I know he was a crook, but he was assembling a half decent team

Worst departures that I can remember (1995 - )

1. David Ginola - I was in the south of France, the sun was setting, my tan was completed and I was playing football. The goons and suporters of other clubs boasted about their best players, I then smugly said "Ginola" only to have someone say to me "Haven't you heard? He's been sold to Villa" My heart broke into two, felt like crying but I couldn't it was the end of my first year at secondary school, you don't cry during those days.....

2. Martin Jol - Pretty much joint first with Ginola this one. I remember being in the SU bar in Warrington watching the game, the second the commentator announced that the club had sacked him every yiddo in there just felt like crying, I looked as is whem my Mother had died when I walked back into halls, truely sad night.

3. Sol Campbell -
To the Scum on a free, felt like throwing up.

4. Carrick -
Went on BBC text service in the morning, after reading the news my fingers uncrossed, why did we sell him FFS!

I loved Hoddle as a player but does no-one else remember that he was trying to leave us for at least 2 years prior to actually going.
At the end of the season his contract was up. He put feelers out to continental clubs (I even heard a whisper about the Goons once) and when he got no takers he signed on for one year only.
When he finally went I wasn't surprised in the least and certainly not as gutted as when Gazza,Waddle,Ginola and Teddy left.

Ginola being shoved, booted, forced out of WHL still brings tears to my eyes. I remember when he came and visited the Lane during a match (CC match I think) and my heart felt fit to burst when I thought of how he could have stayed and finished his career with us.

Excuse me, I need a moment...

I remember doing my paper round in the 80's and feeling dead chuffed seeing us top of the table, 21 pts from the first 8 games or something like that.

Then Pleaty gets sacked for being a nuaghty boy, gutted.
