Sad news, Motty, Brian Moore and Barry Davies were the voices of football growing up. RIP

That's such a shock, he's still regularly on the TV/radio.

RIP Motty, one of the true legends of this sport. :(

My wife is (was) his dentist. She's so upset, said he was a really lovely man. The word legend is thrown around too much but on this occasion it's befitting. RIP Motty.

Sad news

the greatest line ever ….and still Ricky Villa.

I never heard that in real time - luckily - because I was privileged to be in the upper tier behind the goal with RV weaving his way towards the goal, while Motty was saying "and still Ricky Villa" I was screaming "Shoot ya ba$tard" before he took the shot and Wembley erupted - I ended up about 30 feet away from where I was but it didn't matter -
It was the goal of all goals and I got to see it with the Motty commentary about 3am by watching the recorded VHS tape on one of those new fangled VCR's with the piano keys.

I moved to the US in the mid 90's and there was no premiership here, none. I missed it so much so I bought FIFA 1996 which had Motty commentating, his voice made feel like i was back home. Thank you for helping me with my homesickness. RIP Motty!!

Going to be a cold one this weekend so I’m going to get the ‘Motty’ out as a tribute.
RIP Sir, so many voices and faces from my childhood have disappeared over the last six months….

In total shock here as proud to call John a very ,very good friend,we met through racing at Cheltenham over 20 years ago staying in the same hotel,my first conversation with him late at night was a booze fuelled rant saying how has Geoff Hurst got knighted when he couldn't lace Jimmy Greaves boots and as diplomatic ever he said it was a fair point, from there the friendship grew and staying in the same hotel you got to know plenty of regulars and it was something of a family, people would come and go but for about the last 7 years there would be just us and John and Annie,he invited me to matches and for us to stay with them ,but living in the north never got round to it although did attend his 70th. We met every November and March for Cheltenham and always had dinner the Monday night in March,Annie his wife rang on Tuesday to arrange saying he'd had a fall and broken his shoulder but was going to have physio and they were still coming to Cheltenham and then I turn the computer on this morning and see the news. He was simply just a good bloke who loved life,we'll miss you Motty.
