Romero himself is now quoted by La Voz.

The player revealed that ‘his right ankle had swollen too much’, but didn’t make a big thing out of it, sounding like he was trying to prevent himself from getting seriously injured ahead of his return to Tottenham.

“That’s why I decided to come out at half-time, as we also have an important home game with Tottenham Hotspur on Monday against Fulham. But this is a team of animals (Argentina) and whoever comes in is sure to be a cracker.”

So unlike last season, when he seemed at times to feign injury to avoid playing for Tottenham. That's what a change of management can do.
