Not doubting @Trix, but articles like this make it really hard to know what is what when they state this as matter of fact. I have to say journalism in the US can be bad, but the standards in the UK for sports reporting are beyond non-existent comparatively.

"The 23-year-old is out until December after having surgery on his injured hamstring but, if he doesn't sign a new contract, his value will decrease further and it is in Everton's interest to sell now if they want to make a greater profit on their academy graduate."

i have been going to white hart lane to support spurs since 1951 I have seen the good the bad and indifferent players and I have to say that apart from blanchflower and a few others the term brainy does not exist.
So to say that barkley is as thick as shit is if you go by gazza it is an endorsement give me a thicko over a smartarce anyday

If he is out until Jan, Levy is probably trying to negotiate a loan back to Everton until Christmas to bring the fee down....

This article mentions that he'll be out till January. Not sure about the validity.
Cheers SlumDilla, I had seen that but I think they are just repeating the press line, I was wondering if there had been anything form Everton, or anyone else involved in football for that matter:)
The interesting lines in that piece are where it says Ox could ssoon be joined by Drinkwater but with Barkley it just says, "there is interest too" which means bugger all really.

If he's truly out till January why are we even thinking about signing him now? He'll only be cheaper in the January window. Sign him then. We need an actual healthy first team level attacking midfielder in ASAP. Alli is suspended for the first 3 games of the CL. Lamela is still a huge question mark. If Sissoko starts a single CL match I'll be infuriated. No reason that should be happening.

Sounds like he's hanging on for us, but I wonder how long for.
It's not my money, so I'd be all for getting him in now. Let our medical staff manage his recovery. At least he's in and around the squad, so when he does get fit, be that October, November, whenever, he'll already be familiar with our players and management.

We sign him now to guarantee we get him.

For all the people moaning about getting gazumped they suddenly get really picky about when we sign players.

Everyone knows this is a long term developmental investment. Immediate returns weren't expected anyway, so I'm not sure now when there's an injury in the equation people are now upset about having no immediate returns.

30% sell on clause? Levy would rather by brutally decapitated piece by piece than take that. I suspect it will most likely include some guarantees of additional money if he makes X appearances for us this year/season.
Levy's art of the deal again. He knows that's only 1 piece but he's letting the other side think they're getting more value. This really is #levytime.

The benefit of getting him now goes way beyond football matches and on field performance/production. It's a show of dedication to Poch. We've constantly heard that Barkley is the one he wants, the one he's identified throughout the summer. Would it make more financial sense to wait until January? Possibly. But, what damage could it do if Poch wants him now, to start implementing his ethos in Barkley (that sounds sexual), but Levy rejects that in the hopes of a deal in 6 months time?

I'm not going to pretend like I could ever figure out Daniel Levy. But, there needs to be times when he completely backs Pochettino. If it weren't for him, I have a hard time believing we are anywhere near as successful as we are right now. Having Barkley up and running, understanding his expectations come December/January (if this injury is true) could be worth the extra money spent now, as opposed to him coming in January and just beginning to learn and attempting to implement Poch's tactics. It could prove pivotal if we want to stay relevant.
