How so?

Toby and Rose have been great servants to the club and they’re undeniably among the best defenders in Europe on their day but they’re clearly on their way out the door. Mentally Danny’s been gone for a year and Toby for 6 months.

We’re in a strong position to sell them both for probably not far off £100m combined. If we can use a chunk of that money to replace them with De Ligt and Sessegnon, who are both ridiculously exciting talents who look like they’re ready to play in the first team, then we would be mad not to do so.
You really think that De Ligt would provide the same stability to the back line that Toby would?

I don’t think he’d provide the stability Toby provided last year, no, but I think he’s a preferable option to a Toby who doesn’t want to be here.

A valuable player on big wages who doesn’t want to be at the club is of no use to us. I think we need to accept that ship has sailed now, and snap up a potentially world class replacement if one becomes available.

I'm not arguing that, I'm just stating we're clearly going backwards if we're buying high profile teenagers to replace our mid to late 20's established starters.

It might be a case of one step back, then two steps forward. Replacing Toby like for like right now is nigh on impossible. But I also get your concerns about going backwards, which we definitely did with Aurier replacing Walker

I’m not so sure. I can’t think of many ready-made replacements who are both affordable and offer the same level of cover as someone like Toby or Rose, while also offering longevity, so maybe talented teenagers with proven first team experience are the way to go.

Messi was arguably the best player in the world at 20. Michael Owen tore up the Premier League at 19. Mbappé was the most expensive player in the world at 18.

Now don’t get me wrong those players are, of course, exceptional talents who come along once a decade, but given what Sess and De Ligt have demonstrated in their respected clubs already I think we’d be foolish to dismiss what they can offer us solely based on them being teenagers.

I'm just afraid of taking too big of a step back when so many of our players are about to hit their prime. I do think we needed to add some new young blood but not thrilled about teenagers having huge roles.

How huge a role would it actually be for Sessegnon? Whatever position he would be coming in to play he wouldn't be first choice straight away.

Yeah, I probably misworded that. I guess it would seem like we would go into the season with Davies and Sessegnon and wingback meaning Davies still the starter the majority of the time which I'm not thrilled about. But oh well, we're not going to replaces both of them this summer.

Didn't Paris United call both Lucas and Aurier to us? I also recall them calling the Neymar deal as well

They called Lucas on 26 January. Well before the announcement but there had been plenty of press talk before that.

I think there was some ITK over the season about Keanan Bennetts being considered a potential LWB option.

He's miles off defensively as a LB, but LWB suits his skill set, athleticism, and he's had a great season.

I can't imagine Sessegnon would want to come to be 3rd LWB behind Davies + Shaw / Kurzawa etc, with maybe a few minutes at LWF behind Son, Moura etc.

So it would suit our squad balance for 3421 IF Bennetts is thought of as nearly ready.

It does leave us light if we want to play 4231 for a run of games, though there's always KWP, Aurier, and Verts (none obvs ideal for various reasons).

I don't know why but I have this feeling that this kid will be a great player like Bale

God forbid a 17 year old be inconsistent
100% agree, but realistically, what kind of role can we expect a 17 year old to play for a team trying to win the league and challenge in the CL. He's obviously a talent but I don't see how spending 40/50 mil of our transfer budget on him helps us win anything in the near future. Especially when we clearly need to make improvements to our starting lineup let alone our bench.

Advantage Derby in the play off first leg so if they can see out the second leg maybe he will leave Fulham this summer.

He would start off as a rotation option at LWB. In the back-three formation the wingbacks don't do an awful lot of defending anyway, and we're clearly in need of wide options who have the pace to beat their man and drag the opposition out of its shape.

We absolutely have space in the squad for a young, pacey wingback who plays with his head up in the final third and has a tendency of ghosting into great positions and poaching goals but who has a bit of developing to do defensively. He wouldn't have to shoulder the load for us in attack the way he is asked to do for Fulham, just providing that wide outlet and chipping in with goals would be more than enough. He'd have every opportunity to win the job from Davies over the course of the next few seasons.
